Presently, I do solo gigs using a Boss Looper to play "home made" backing tracks that I play guitar over and others sing over.
Presently when I am done creating a backing track in Sudio One, I use Export Mixdown to create a 16bit, 44.1KHZ WAV file that is compatable with a BOSS RC 30 and RC 300 loopers. The file size is enourmous (expecially when I create a seperate file for bass and a seperate file for drums for each song) and the BOSS looopers that I have can quickly run out of room. The BOSS RC 600 has a lot more storage capability, and I am thinking about getting one, but it is a lot of $ and a big time investment to get it up and running. I was hoping for some tips on how to shrink the size of my WAV files (if that is even possible) or thinking out of the box, is there another way that I should be thinking about to play backing tracks at gigs. Any thoughts you have would be appreciated. |
For those loopers it looks you are stuck with the WAV file format your specified, so unfortunately no. Pity it doesn't support FLAC format.
If it is just a simple backing track that is always the same, you could use your phone, but as you are using pedals I doubt that is the case.
Intel i9 9900K (Gigabyte Z390 DESIGNARE motherboard), 32GB RAM, EVGA Geforce 1070 (Nvidia drivers).
Dell Inspiron 7591 (2 in 1) 16Gb. Studio One Pro 6.x, Windows 11 Pro 64 bit, also running it on Mac OS Catalina via dual boot (experimental). Presonus Quantum 2626, Presonus Studio 26c, Focusrite Saffire Pro 40, Faderport Classic (1.45), Atom SQ, Atom Pad, Maschine Studio, Octapad SPD-30, Roland A300, a number of hardware synths. |
This is a really huge topic. I currently do not have any bands or project that use backing tracks, but when I had I either used Ableton Live to play them back or copied them to the flash storage of my Yamaha MoXF6 workstation (similar to what you do with the Boss looper).
Nowaways I would play them back from an iPad, my phone or use the Studio One's Show Page if I need more flexibility. More flexibility primarily means switching song sections, looping them spontaneously (for a solo or an open intro) and cue into the next section. I use this a lot for my work as a musical director in the theater of my city. Here are two videos that show these features in action:

Wav files are none compressed, so there's no means to reducing the file size. For example, converting to mp3 reducing the file size to potentially one-tenth the file size, and back to wav won't do anything to reduce the waveform file size. It would only degrade the quality.
Yeah, it seems like Studio One's Show page would be a nice way of dynamically changing parts and something you should look into. Or, as the guys suggest, go the iPad, or cell phone route, which if properly set up should give you some nice [though locked in] sequences. You could opt to save different sequences which could be useful. Though if I were doing backing tracks, I'd most definately explore the show page. On a side note, I recently discovered you can't in real time, change tempo in Studio One's Show Page which if still true, behooves me. But the musical change possibilities are still pretty exciting.

You can of course have tempo changes in the backing tracks but there's no Marker Track so these tempo changes couldn't be made in real-time and aren't reflected in the grid.

Sure. I guess one could pre bake some tempo change based on what they want to deliver in the performance. That's still pretty cool. Thanks for noting the background tempo can change at least as it is. That's a good thing.

To the OP - is there any reason that the tracks have to be played off of the looper pedal?
As others have mentioned, an iPad is a good way to go. I use Set List Maker on a 10 year old iPad, and it works great. Backing tracks and lyrics all controlled by a wireless MIDI foot pedal. I plug a Bluetooth audio adapter into the board, so no cables to the iPad. |
Thank you all for your responses. I have yet to watch the videos, but I will tonight. In any case, just a few more comments
1. I am not married to using loopers to play my backing tracks. I just want a quick way to select the tracks I want to play at a gig. I usually do not go in with a fixed set list. I try to tailor what tracks I play on the fly based on what the audience wants to hear. 2. I have an Ipad (Studio One V5 software is on a Windows desktop PC). Using export mixdown,I could create MP3 files and load them into my ITunes library, which my IPad will recognize in Apple Music. I have a QSC K12.2 speaker that I use to play tracks at gigs. Unfortunatly my speaker does not have bluetooth (newer ones have it) and I am not sure how to get the files to play on my QSC speaker. Suggestions welcome. |

Check out Stagetracks and/or Multitracker iPad apps, there are YouTube videos for these.

Maybe one day I'll actually finish a project! |

I have watch the show S1 Show videos, which was an eye opener. The good news is I don't have to worry about tempo changes, so I don't see any serious issues. Now I just need to figure out how to get my tracks to play into a QSC 12.2 Speaker that does not have Bluetooth and without using a looper pedal.
