After stupidly updating to 6.1, my UAD plugins suddenly are crippled. I'm getting errors all the time with projects that did not have errors yesterday before the update! Do NOT update if you use UAD plugins. It doesn't matter if you're using Native or DSP. I'm getting errors with only 49% DSP usage.

New bugs on top of the old ones:

1. Tracks randomly stop playing audio. Hitting Mute then Mute again makes it play normally.
2. Files take much longer to open.
3. VU meters stop working randomly. Then they work again. No known workaround yet.

This is in addition to the old bugs that have been around for years (from reading old posts when I looked for workarounds).
1. Orphans! This is a byproduct of the design flaw of disassociating tracks and instruments and piano rolls and channels. Orphans randomly happen. Workaround: delete and do it all over. No professional DAW should allow for the possibility of orphans. DAWs are to save time, not create problems.
2. The Piano-Roll-Suddenly-Displays-A-Million-Tracks bug. All of a sudden, the piano roll has decided to select more tracks and add them to the one you're editing. You have to manually deselect all these randomly selected tracks.

SORELY NEEDED FEATURE: Spill. Select a Buss, then select Spill and all channels disappear except for the ones feeding to and from the buss you just selected. This is a HUGE timesaver!

I appreciate this happened upon upgrade but software dependencies means it is hard to point fingers at the real cause so I would keep an open mind even if what you say is true.

UAD plugins up to date?
How about new songs/projects?

Just suggestions below without much to go on...

First thing I would do is update your audio interface firmware and drivers. Those symptoms do sound very much like audio interface drivers functionality, not saying it is, but I would try that.

Also a wildcard, somebody mentioned there is possibly an S1 audio cache bug in another thread without much info, so you may want to try deleting this, but make sure you back up first. How do you do this? No idea. This one is for images:

Thanks for the darts! Worth looking into... but everything worked great yesterday. The only change was the S1 update. But I will check out those links.

Right but as stated, that's no smoking gun, although it may look that way. Cheers.

I just got around to updating to 6.1 on the mac m1 mini. Everything seems to be working, not seeing the problems you're talking about, I'll do some more testing.

Frankly the bugs are bad enough to roll back to 6.0.2 at this stage (looking at the main thread) regardless of whether it's a system config issue or an actual bug. It is no surprise for a major point release, 6.1.1 will resolve most of them, if you've backed your songs and projects before you upgraded it should be no biggy.

If you roll back and then update to 6.1.1 later you may experience more of the same however, so I'd try and see if you can get it fixed first if you have the time.

I suspect 6.1.1 will appear within the next four weeks or earlier.

I had 2 crashes in 5 minutes, after 6.1.1 update.
It happens when I was editing some audio tracks and it tries to do the Autosave...

Crashes when saving most likely mean that a plug-in has crashed while reporting preset data to the DAW. Try if the same happens without any active 3rd-party plug-ins.

Thanks for all your suggestions. Alas, none of them helped. I am also experiencing a very harsh digital noise burst anytime I stop playback. That's been going on for a while. Buffer size doesn't matter, although with the max size it happens less.

I exported all my tracks and am mixing in Luna.

After months of intensive use of Studio One, I have sadly come to the conclusion that it's just not robust enough for mixing high track count projects yet. Too many bugs, plus the orphan track design flaw.

I will still use it for writing/arranging because it's speedier and less bloated than Logic.

Luna ain't perfect, but it's got the Summing Extensions, which are unmatched by any other DAW. It also incorporates tape sims into every tracks super easily. And although the Faderport 16 works with it, it doesn't have all the functionality. That's to be expected.

It's all about trade-offs and workflow, and for me the S1 to Luna workflow gives best and most reliable results now.

Thanks for the help!

With all the bugs and design flaws that you've been mentioning for weeks, editing functions that you consider "useless", command names that you consider "bad grammar", I strongly suspect you just haven't understood the program yet or are not even willing to understand the program.

Oh, I understand the program VERY well.` That's how I run into the bugs and design flaws. I consider it the best DAW there is with many useful features and a great workflow. They could make it even better by correcting the flawed grammar, fixing the orphan problem, squash the piano roll bug, and other random misbehaviors.

Yes, many features are useless for me -- they're designed to sell product --- things like collaboration features, more and more templates, lyrics, etc. Features that professionals do not use but help sell the product. A dilettante sees Templates for different types of projects and things it will turn them into a producer. That's fine --- I get it. But fixing basic flaws and bugs will get more customers than the nerf features.

If they translated the English version correctly, that would help sales since native English speakers could learn the program much faster.
