OK, first up I am an amateur trying to expand my knowledge so I can make better music.

I'm currently working on a song which I'd link to speed up at the end. My idea is that the song will start out at 98 BPM and speed up to 120 BPM (or maybe a little faster) for roughly the last third of the song. Currently the 98 BPM section is in 4/4 time (S1 default, and just haven't changed it and not sure if I should or not).

Question 1: Can Studio One Pro 2.6 do the speed up to 120 BPM within one song?
Or, should I make them seperate and use the project page to make the play without the normal 2 second space in between the songs?

Question 2: Will I need to change the time signature to something like 6/8 (guessing here) to achieve this?

Question 3: Is there some formula to figure the time signature on a speed up like this?

Question 4: Could someone explain to me how BPM and time signatures are related?
(i.e. - would a 4/4 time at 120 BPM sound similar to 8/8 time at 60 BPM (again, I'm guessing here))

I think my understanding of BPM is pretty solid, 98 BPM = 98 Beats within a 1 minute span, please correct me if I am wrong here. Time signatures are a little more grey to me, so maybe someone could explain those to me a little more and maybe even answer my questions in the process. If someone knows a good book or website where I may find the answers, then that will also suffice.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

1. Yes. That's what the tempo track is for.

2. No. Time signature has more to do with the "feel" or "groove" of the song than the speed. Think of a waltz - that's 3/4 to 6/8. Most rock is 4/4.

3. Moot since you won't be changing the time signature.

4. A time signature of 4/4 means (top number) there are 4 beats per measure and (bottom number) the quarter note is the length of a beat. That's it. These beats could be 30ms or 300ms depending on the tempo. Faster songs don't need a different time signature. Like I said - most rock is 4/4 and you can hear how many different speeds there are in songs.

As far as the BPM you are correct. Where you're missing the connection is the 3/4 to 4/4 tells you what a "beat" is by the denominator - in both 3/4 and 4/4 it is the quarter note. In 6/8, there are 6 beats per measure but the beat is an eighth note. Just like in fractions, it is possible to convert 6/8 down to 3/4 and change the tempo, but that's a more in depth discussion.

Long story short: open the tempo track and insert a new tempo wherever you want it to speed up. If you want it to speed up gradually, increase the BPM by like 2 BPM every couple measures. To go from 98 to 120 as you described, that would take 11 increases over 22 measures (this is just an example).

So where is this tempo track? Click here:

One more thing - you'll need all audio files set to stretch to tempo or you'll end up with some weirdness...

Thanks a bunch mwright137, that makes things much more clear to me. Now I'm off to play with this knowledge that you have enlightened me to. I had noticed the available "Tempo Track" but was unsure of how to use it, thanks to you, I now know. Once the song is finished I plan to upload it to Nimbit and I'll post a link to it here (in the appropriate forum of course) to see what everyone thinks (and to be critiqued as well).
