Has the Prime (free version) been discontinued because I can’t find a download for it on the Presonus website?

I have S1 pro (user since v1) but I’m trying to help a friend who has the S1 Prime v5 but is having difficulties using it so it would be better for me to assist him if I was using the same software version so that I can be sure that any advice I give him can be reproduced at his end.

I appreciate that it may now only be available as v6 but as I say I can’t find a download link for any Prime version on the Presonus website! I have asked Presonus sales support but they don’t seem to understand my request…! There are downloads from other sites but for obvious reasons I’d prefer to download from a trusted source.

AFAIK there's only one download, covering all versions. Download that and the version (and access to further downloadable content) will be set upon registration and activation. New users get a trial period for S1 Pro which you can skip (option under Studio One / Activation) to go straight to using the Prime version.

There have never been different downloads for Studio One Pro/Artist/Prime/Trial. It's one download, one installation, one program. Only the activation decides about the current version and available features.

Thanks for that - it could be clearer on the website, which shows availability and prices for all the other versions but as far as I can see doesn’t mention the free Prime version or how to get it, wonder why?
I’ll try again tomorrow to see if I can activate the Prime version from the latest ‘full’ S1 software download….

Well, back in 2018 PreSonus had a direct link to Studio One 3 Prime. That's how I got started...

Here's an Internet Archive snapshot of that page. Don't really understand why PreSonus forces you to download the trial installer these days... not very transparent or customer friendly, IMO.

Prime is still for free, so that seems pretty customer friendly to me.

As is the offer to try Pro for free, which from a sales point of view seems a good tactic. And after the free grace period, if you want to keep using S1 for free, it automatically reverts to Prime, for free.

Did I mention 'free'..? ;)

Thanks again….
Referring to my original post, it is specifically the Prime version I need - trying to convert a friend onto S1 who’s having teething problems (I’m already a Pro user).

Well, let your friend install S1 v6 (the one and only installer there is), start it up, go to Studio One / Studio One Activation and select "Run Studio One Prime - the feature limited FREE version".

You can select the same option while helping your friend, so that you're both on the same version.

But you have missed the entire point of the OP as you state the obvious. It's easy if you already know how to do that.

But for a noobie looking for that info, it is very difficult to locate those instructions... that is the unfriendly part now. It used to be listed on the product page.

I recently ran into the same issue looking up the Prime link for a friend of mine, and I'm not a noobie!

Wrong on all counts...

Edit: I was unable to locate my original Prime installer, so without proof that it was an actual different download, I will defer to the benefit of the doubt...

But Prime did have it's own link in the shop until 2021, as the Internet Archive snapshots above prove. Unfortunately, there is no longer any direct link to Prime in the PreSonus shop itself. Unless you already know that you can switch to Prime during a trial install, then good luck!

So now it's an unnecessary exercise in frustration trying to locate those newer procedures, and the only way I located them was by searching the forum. I will leave any speculation as to the possible reason for this change up to others, as I am just stating the facts as known to set the record straight.

I just think it is important to make it easily available for new users to find. That's how I got started with Studio One. And I am a happy Studio One Pro user now, not some random guy who just got pissed because he couldn't get it for free! :D

That's how I remember it. Early in 2020, had to assist someone for their church recordings and sent them the link for Prime.

Presonus must have marketly overthought the ability to push the more expensive path. Mo money, Mo money, mo money! Greedy lil' buggers.

Some people just want to tinker or they'll go to some garbage app. The old way, people both have a choice, and then explore more if they want more. No illusions,

Thinking back how it started, I got a disk with my first PreSonus mixer  But the very first Prime download link may still have taken you to the same installer as for the other 'versions'. If registration and activation decide the features the program offers then we can all be right. Hurray! ;)

Why I'm answering this thread, I'd have to take a long hard look at just what in the hell am I doing, and if I have a life or not.

The best thing in terms of program access to a number of useful options is to have the Sphere subscription, or the Prime (free), Studio, and Professional packages. They are all winners to the intended end user. I'm not going into a pro-con package discussion here, but I think credit should go to Presonus for not snubbing, baiting, or sending a Dear John letter (who could that be?) to their users.

If it's one link now to access Prime, or any of the above, who gives a rats ____.
🐀

As Jazzundso mentioned, the activation decides the current version. One could start with the full version to trial, then go to Prime (free). Let's move on.

But that's just the issue now! I personally don't see an issue with the trial thingy, except that fact is not explained anywhere except in these forums by knowledgeable members.

So Prime is buried now unless you know where it is (in the trial)! That's like looking for an Easter egg.

That's fair, I guess I'm just out of gas on the subject, but it evidently is an issue with some. I'd have to revisit it (though I wont).

The OP had trouble utilizing it, so it's relevant up to the point of whomever is in the driver's seat (isn't it always?). I mean some people will just get to the end result, and others will sit there like a little bird with their mouth open and say "feed me". That probably sounds a little sarcastic (not towards anyone), but I think there is some truth to it. Just look at the forum. There are a LOT of inquiries where people either can't view the program on the screen correctly, can't see the right side of the mouse to click and see an instantly available menu selection, etc.

In this case, it's possibly worth where the link is, note "access to all program options".
A moderator could probably que it up in a personal suggestion box, but man it would be nice if there was some real emphasis on DAW improvements. I'll remove myself to those other needs. Cheers ;)

The OP (me) won’t have trouble ‘utilizing’ Prime - the trouble was finding it… I now know, due to the kind guidance given by some, where to look for it - thanks again….

I recently had the same question as you. I was simply trying to share the link to Prime with a friend to nudge them towards Studio One.

As a Studio One Pro user since 2017, I guess that would make me a sort of a fanboy, but I do hate that word as it tends to have a derogatory connotation.

But as a company, PreSonus appears to make some odd marketing decisions from time to time. I cannot fathom why burying Prime in the trial deal is going to increase market share. I really do want Studio One to grow and be successful, which is why I think that Prime should be readily available just as it was when I hooked up with it 6 years ago.

I will add that it appears some of the members here have made some rather insensitive comments in this thread towards potential new users and their perceived inability to grasp how it's done now. Lighten up OK? Everybody start out with a first step... ;)

That's all I have to say about the subject.

I can assure you, I was the only one insensitive. I did add what appeared to be a solution which was Presonus to note the path contains all (its simply inside at installation). Still, if it's one road to Albuquerque, then it's one road to Albuquerque. Thankfully, the OP got the direction from the good people here early on. It's not my position to deem what should be more important so I apologize for that to Steve Carter [OP].

As to Presonus choosing one link for all paths, sure I don't care for it either, but it's an option select road. Perhaps a bit greedy being less visable. Perhaps it could also be deemed a bit smart.
That [fictionally] small potatoes user who just needs a free multitrack recording medium might take that road to all you want for 30 days, or even Sphere for $15 a month and say, "dang, I can even do this...".
We can all have an opinion, and likely rightfully say, "just bullit the install path from the start, Presonus!"
But in the final analysis, they are going to do what they feel promotes growth.

Barring any outside views from others or not. It's still worth noting [is my new stand] and perhaps they'll take note. I doubt it, but you know what they say about the squeaky gear gets the oil. ;)
If newcomers are turned away (which marketing directly or indirectly monitor), then they'll adjust or tweak as necessary.

BTW, I also hate and never use the fan___ term as well. I don't see it as derogatory, but seriously childish. Agreed.
