You do NOT need to buy a new license.

You said "This system is win 11 compatible and free upgrade is available". So have you not answered your own question here?

No the system I'm replacing has win 10, and the option to upgrade to 11

So is it the new or the old system you want to upgrade to Win 11? It's not clear what you're asking really.

If the question is whether you can get a new machine with W11 installed and then use that W11 license to upgrade your existing W10 machine - then no, you won't as the W11 license will be OEM.

Only retail licenses can be moved between hardware. But you can pick up licenses super cheap from companies that resell them, such as Royal CD Keys. You're talking a few quid.

Still don't understand what you are asking.

If you are buying a new machine that has Win10 on it, and it comes with the option for an upgrade to Win11, yes. That will work. Win11 is a free upgrade to Win10 on THAT MACHINE as long as it actually has the hardware requirements for Win11 which are steeper than Win 10 was.

Hi l know its confusing
When configuring new pc
Last option asks what operating system you want, choices being win 11 or win 11 pro
Which cost £134 and £178 respectively
Or the other option none, assuming you already have a Windows license
Well yes, I have Windows 10 on the pc I am using now, which Windows update shows, this system is compatible to update to 11, but I am wary about doing so. What I'm trying to find out is, Scan (the company) will install win 11 and when I get the new PC I transfer the Windows licence (product code) to authorise it.
But this will be win 10 licence. I don't know if this will work,

I'd ask Scan, not on a Presonus forum personally! :)

But in order to attempt to answer your question.
Firstly: You currently have a Win 10 license on the existing machine, it won't be Win 11 until you do the free upgrade. So to answer that, no a Win 10 license can't be used as a Win 11 license.

Secondly: As I mentioned previously, whether you have retail or OEM version on W10/11 is the largest factor which determines whether you can transfer it to the new machine. So you'd need to find that out.

If they will install W11 and not register a license to it then that's by far your best option in regards to cost, I don't know whether they offer that option or not however. Worse case scenario you'll have to pay a few quid to get a retail key if there's not an available license on your MS account when you sign in to that new machine.

But really, these are discussions you need to have with Scan. Coming with an O/S takes away any driver or additional configuring your side of course, so it depends how much you value that side of the service.

Your bios' key for Windows 10 will be associated with Windows 11 if you do the upgrade from Win 10 to 11, which is free from Microsoft.

I've not used 11...

10 has done some terrible things, you buy new hardware and get it working then they update and it don't work anymore. Two months later it starts working again with newer update. There's plenty of stories like that, I'm still living them now.
But I always manage to get it working somehow.

Is 11 going to be better? have less security issues? Need less updates?

That would be good to know.

Not planning to update any time soon here. 10 Pro (currently 22H2) has been solid for me. I have 11 on a laptop for non DAW use. I upgraded that from Win 10. It's working fine for it's intended use but it's never seen Studio One or anything else studio related for that matter.

Thanks for explaining a little bit more. I agree that you are going to have to ask Scan those questions.

You do NOT need Win 11 Pro. The only extra features you get with Pro are corporate features like Domain availability and a more robust Bitlocker, which you are going to need to turn off for using the PC as a studio computer anyway.

The big issues generally tend to happen within the first year of release, consequently it's best to wait a year after any OS release (Windows 11 has achieved that mark). The bad rep Windows 10 got was generally by people who installed straight away, upon release or even jumped on the prerelease bandwagon. Windows 11 is mature now and I strongly recommend installing it if your hardware supports it. Not much different from 10 but definitely worth it and it of course will be supported for longer.

Well they're not "features" specifically, but 11 gives engineer types mixing hundreds of tracks with lots of plugins a few advantages assuming they're super tweaker types with particularly cutting edge PCs, cause it helps the latest Intel and AMD CPUS work out core allotments and a few more heavy techie things along those lines which also require deep dives into the BIOS.

But for everyday DAW work for the rest of us, 10 or 11 aint gonna make much difference. One advantage of already committing to 11 is you don't have to concern yourself with when 10 will no longer be supported. One disadvantage is that even after 11's been out over a year, not all software and hardware has caught up.

You know there are several supported ways you can delay updates, right?

You might possibly want to consider your own role in your relationship with Windows Update. Something tells me you haven't exhausted all the troubleshooting steps you could taken have to identify what's throwing it off.

If Update was as demonic as you suggest, people on five continents wouldn't be happily living out their recording dreams with Win10 PCs as the centerpiece of their studios.

Found out the licence I have is OEM
so can't transfer, so will have to purchase new.
Microsoft have got it really sown up, as the guy at scan explained, even if you buy a retail licence, (about £40 more) by the time you come to replace your PC there will be a new version of Windows, so if you want to upgrade
You still have to pay,

I have several retail Windows 8 Pro licenses (maybe 7 can't remember) before 8 came out. I've upgraded for free to 8.1, 10 and and 11 and used it on new replacement machines. Maybe I'm just lucky.
