regards
Can someone explain to me how to record an audio track (vocal or guitar) and make a virtual instrument play it? I have Vocoder Softube, maybe it's useful, I know there are sidechain techniques that could allow it but I can't find them. Thank you |
Do you mean something like this? > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qh94S4WjgM0
Extract Midi from Audio via integrated Melodyne |
Yes, pretty easy:
- Add a new instrument track - Right-click the audio event - Choose Audio -> Edit with Melodyne - Drag the audio event onto the instrument track Done

The snag is that it works well with monophonic material (like a vocal) but needs the (rather expensive) full version of Melodyne for chorded material (like most string instruments). S1 allows you to extract chords from audio material too but I haven't found a video yet where both techniques are combined.

Thanks to you three, I'm doing it here and yes, the audio material must be very clear in the trnsients, if it doesn't join the notes, I'll soon start trying it with chords, I have the full melodyne.
By the way, I still haven't mastered chord extraction very well in SO, it's a whole new challenge. It sure has many creative applications. |
Hi, just found this thread while researching a similar topic - perhaps someone can help with this -
I have a complex old stereo mix that I'd like to extract a MIDI bass part from - so - First I run it through Spectralayers to extract the stems and isolate the bass part as far as possible, Second, I edit with Melodyne using the technique as demonstrated in the Gregor video, Third, I drag that to a new instrument track - at which point the track data disappears both on the new instrument track and the track I'm dragging. So I click undo and try again with the same result. It appears that if I try this without having used Spectralayers it works - is it possible this is causing the Problem? Thanks |
However you want to process that audio is fine but to make sure you don't have a linked copy or something I would bounce your results one at a time and then edit with melodyne.
Like here I drag in a wav file from the pool, then edit with melodyne but I don't do anything, just close the editor and then drag the audio to an existing instrument track. Might try different algorithms to see which works best, better if you have studio version probably.

Tacman7 wroteHowever you want to process that audio is fine but to make sure you don't have a linked copy or something I would bounce your results one at a time and then edit with melodyne. Thanks for that - I seem to be operating in a similar way as your .gif shows - but however I try I still get the track deleting itself. The version I am using is Spectralayers 6 which is antique apparently so that may be the problem. I actually had a reply from Steinberg about it which didn't directly help but I was encouraged to try a free trial of the latest version - did that - but in a hurry don't immediately see the option to demix stems, it's unlikely they've removed that option, just made it hard to find I expect. So, all filed under "T" for too difficult at the moment, wasn't as important as getting on with other things. Thanks. |
So your audio file disappears?
I can't think what would do that but there are a lot of settings. The audio is only removed from the track, it's still in the pool and you can drag it back to a track if you need it. Did you try bouncing it first?
