What are the differences between an Aux channel and a Bus channel?

Why would I choose one over the other? I generally thought busses covered everything; drum bus, reverb send, delay send, parallel compression send, instrument group, etc.

Where does the Aux come in and what purpose does it serve?

Aux channels are used to apply FX to external instruments like hardware synths, digital pianos, etc.
Bus channels are for routing purposes, you can't directly record something to it, it is just a "main channel" for the channels that you sent to that specific bus channel.

Got ya! Thanks for the reply! I read that article before, and I admit; I still don't really get it haha.

That being said, when it comes to bussing a group of instruments down or using effects sends (I like to be able to send effects to other effects). Bus channels will probably be used 95+% of the time then?

I'm not sure I follow 100%, but I'm pretty sure the answer is yes. I never use fx/"aux" channels. I just shift/control click stuff and create a new bus.

Bye......

Cool! Thanks! I figured busses would literally do everything anyone would need. At that point, I just wondered, why add these other things then? haha

The most obvious difference is the presentation in the console GUI: You can show/hide all buses, you can show/hide all FXes and you can show/hide all AUXes. And there are more workflow examples, like S1 automatically creating an FX-bus when you drag an effect onto a channel, not a standard bus or an AUX.

So maybe compare them to 3 boxes labeled knives, forks and spoons. Up to you how you store your cutlery, but it's kinda handy to keep them sorted in case you're having soup.
