I am interested in producing lofi/hip-hop/jazz/neo-soul tracks and I need to get a plugin which will allow me to create those deep bass sounds heard in hip-hop/trap/lofi.
Does anyone have any recommendations? |
Have you considered the virtual analog style synths included in Studio One Artist and Pro: Mojito (monophonic) and Mai Tai (polyphonic)? You really don't need to find a dedicated deep bass synth to make those sounds. Also there is the included Sample One sampler plugin that you can just drag a bass sample into. Plenty of tutorials on the net show how to make a bass in a virtual analog synth.
The Roland 303 started the bass synth trend: https://www.roland.com/us/products/rc_tb-303/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_TB-303 "The TB-303 has a single oscillator, which produces either a "buzzy" sawtooth wave or a "hollow-sounding" square wave. This is fed into a 18dB low-pass filter, which is manipulated by an envelope generator." Users program notes and slides using a basic sequencer. 303 DAY: DJ Pierre and the Roland TB-303 https://youtu.be/_zQA0WZdApc And if I misunderstood your request, and you instead meant the deep booming bass kick drum rather than the bassline, you may be thinking about the Roland TR-808. "The 808 is noted for its powerful bass drum sound, built from a sine oscillator, low-pass filter and voltage-controlled amplifier." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_TR-808 Same advice as above, explore the virtual analog synths on hand to make your own sounds. The oscillators, filters, and amplifiers that you will need are there to explore. |
Check out SubLab (futureaudioworkshop.com)
Easy to use, and not much $$. I've used it on a few tracks to compliment my real bass guitar track, very nice effect. |
There is also this FX enhancement for your bass tracks:

SubLab XL is the way to go, 808s and Reese Bass are really easy to create with it.

Sure there are tools that you can buy to take a shortcut for production, if you don't wish to learn sound design and make your own sounds.
There is nothing really magic about sub bass, other than some creative producers originally learned how to layer and process basic waveforms. Something that you could do with basic virtual analog synths and some FX. There is nothing wrong with taking shortcuts if your goal is to produce tracks as quickly as possible. Technology is awesome! |
I'm with JohnBW here. Sure, go for that plugin that turns you on. Hip hop, trap, etc has no corner on Bass sounds or creativity. Unless you want heavy bit crushed license plate in traffic vibration. Lol.
There's so many classic and mean bass synths, and analog types. You can even transpose down an octave or two, use Mojito, an 808, or guitar resampled down with a parallel track. The next best thing to creating, or better is the added sound designing you can do quite easily. Bass is still extraordinarily different in timbre and feel from other bass instruments. An 808, a stand up bass, Prophet 5, Oberheim OBX, or Moog Bass Pedals are all hugely different from one another. All truly beautiful as well! Go get you some, and mess with it/create it. Imagination and accessibility. What could be better?

Plenty of tutorials on the net show how to make a bass in a virtual analog synth. I've got the low kick covered with the HipHop kit for EZdrummer. I'm loving the advice to try a sound design approach and using the Presonus plugins Mojito and Mai Tai. One of the tricks I learned from a book is to gate a 32hz sine wave and trigger the gate w/ kick into the sidechain. Seems like I could take it further with some filtering and oscillation. I tried using the MPC software which has sub bass samples but ultimately decided I would like to keep all of the editing in one DAW for ease of workflow. |
FWIW, I'm using Cherry Audio Lowdown and Syntronic Bully - both good and useful (IMHO) emulations of the Taurus bass pedals. But maybe those are too analog? There is always Massive, of course.

Omnisphere. All day. Everyday.
It has all of the "plug n play" instant gratification one could ever want, and once you're past that, it's a monster for deep dive programming. All styles. All genres. Don't let anyone tell you that it's "only for film scores". My productions these days are almost all Omni. Sure it's expensive, but it's really all you need and instead of buying the newest plugin of the month, just pick up one of the many 3rd party libraries if you feel you need new inspiration. They're cheaper than Kontakt libraries. Oh, and there's plenty of boom in it... tg

I have Omnisphere (seems like forever now). Only reading the OP"s request, "bass sounds heard in hip-hop/trap/lofi", it doesn't scream Omnisphere.

Spectrasonics Trillian for acoustic bass. MODO Bass is okay too.
Sublab XL for synth bass and 808s. There is no need for any other plugin IMO. Edit: Seems like I replied to this a while ago saying Sublab.

The new-ish Spectrasonics Sonic Expansion "Seismic Shock" (released last year) is all about bass and hip hop/dance/EDM sounds. All of the Sonic Expansions are really well done. tg

Yes they are! (Expansion packs). I mostly enjoy getting sounds from almost anywhere. Always have. Bass like most instruments lends itself to so many possibilities. One of my favorite instruments is just being in the groove of a good bass line. It's really quite meditative!
I have a 68" tobacco sunbirst Fender P Bass(all original), and it quite honestly needs nothing. Either direct, or through an Ampeg SVT, it's just Bass for days. Love Taurus Bass pedals as well. Then again, an acoustic upright bass is also inspiring. Too much to list in the world of bass. Enjoy!

(Imagine gif from the old days)
"buy all the things!" @omni/trillion: Nope. No, nada, zippo, zilch. Too much "meh" to get to the good stuff. Jack of all trades, mastering nothing here. I no longer can stand ANY "real bass" sample stuff. Way too robotic even with options (and I play bass fairly well, so really no need) But I did all that back in the day. But I digress........ One thing that is on topic possibly: Arturia Mini V3. Seems to cover all my synth bass stuff really well. Easy to demo (if you are not bothered by the 15 minute rule, but it never expires) And pretty sure you can pick it up pretty easy on the second hand market (try "knobcloud" ) |
JohnBW wroteWell, this conversation has certainly strayed from "I need to get a plugin which will allow me to create those deep bass sounds heard in hip-hop/trap/lofi" to "the groove of a good bass line. It's really quite meditative!" Omnishpere threw me. But the simple love of bass comes in all sizes. Trans to jazz to you name it. It can be had though for very cheep. Even a Strat recorded direct, down 1 octave. Double it, throw a crossover on it at around 160 hz, pan it. Bit crush it if you're into lofi. Yeah, Omnisohere was not my immediate thoughts on trans, trap, lofi. One can grab a $50 plug like Melda's MBassador (on sale) can do wonders. Or just grab a guitar. There's tons of cheep alternatives. Like I said earlier. Imagination and a few cheep plugs or synths. .
