I have a an instrument track and decide that I would like to insert 4 bars (or some other number of bars) at time X.

Currently, I select the split tool, split the track at the desired point, drag the right part to the right the desired number of bars, double-click in the empty space left by dragging to create the "blue thingy", and then drag that "blue thingy" to the left and right to fill the empty space left by dragging the right part, then press G to group the whole thing as one single track.

It would be so much easier if I could position the cursor on the track at the desired point, right click, then select "insert empty bars", enter the number of desired bars, and press enter, voila!

But obviously that "easier" option doesn't work. So, is there a better way to do this than what I currently do?

Might be slow on the uptake, but you could simply double click (or alt click for a pattern), decide the size and then click "d" for duplicate. Or if in standard midi, just double click and make the clips the size you want.

Am I even following?

Ripple Edit
In normal operation, if you delete a Part (or a section of a Part) from the timeline, all other Parts on the timeline remain in position, and a space is left where the deleted Part was. If you'd like the Parts ahead of the deleted region to move backward to fill that space, say, when editing spoken word content where gaps are undesirable, enable Ripple Edit mode. To do so, press the Ripple Edit button in the toolbar, which looks like this:

Apart from automatically filling in gaps when cutting or deleting content, Ripple Edit also introduces a sort of "displacement" behavior when editing. If you copy a Part and paste it in the middle of another, instead of replacing (or overlapping) that section of the target Part, the target Part is split at the edit point, and moved forward in the timeline, to make space for the pasted Part. If you move a Part to the start point of another Part, instead of replacing or overlapping the content below, the two Parts simply switch places.

Similarly, if you trim the end of a part to change its length, the Parts downstream move to maintain their relative position to the end of the trimmed Part. This behavior extends to other editing operations, such as Crop to Content and Nudge/Nudge Back.

Try this. Place the Loop start at where you want to insert the 4 bars (time X). Make the loop 4 bars long by dragging out the loop end. Now, right click inside the loop along the timeline.and select "Insert silence in loop" (along those words).
Bingo. You can duplicate track(s) as needled

OK, the solution presented by Lokefly seemed to work pretty well. Double clicking on the empty space left after the insertion creates the desired empty bars. This is definitely easier than my original method..
THANKS!!!

Cool.I think everyone's solution here works. Its what method you want as the situation presents itself.

Here's even a faster method but only faster if your song is further developed and you want to insert and duplicate all tracks.

Create an arranger track. Now, if there's an area you want to insert 4 bars. Slice (if necessary) the arrangement track where you want to duplicate all of the song in that spot. Let's say, an additional 4 bars of a chorus.

Now simply select the arrangement track at that place, and select [duplicate] (D). In one stroke you just inserterd 4 bars and duplicated 4 bars to all tracks at that location.

One stop shopping!

Yes! All of the suggested answers were great and they each had their specific application, but the one that fit my needs the best was the one by Lokeyfly. Thanks to all for answering. I learn so much by being part of this group and am so appreciative of your help!!!
