I like many others own the license to S1 5.5.2 and in the near future whenever S1 6 comes out I will be faced with three possibilities:- 1/ Buy the upgrade license to S1 6 Pro 2/ Move over to Sphere or lastly 3/ Do nothing.

Now I often use News Feeds for information and learning so it was with interest I saw the following:-

News Feed
PreSonus Sphere Exclusive
PreSonus Sphere Memberships include access to awesome Construction Kits like “Memphis Grit” and “Nola Neon”….but how do you use these in production? Check out this exclusive video with Gregor to learn more!

Well out of interest I thought I would do just that and learn more thinking I would be taken to a Video. Nope the link took me straight to an invite to either sign in or join Sphere. Before you all shout it says "EXCLUSIVE" perhaps someone at PreSonus might consider the following.

On the basis that many will be making a decission in the near future on S1 6 if you put Sphere News Feeds up you should at least allow the license owner to see/read them. In my case the contrary is happening you are actually making me anti-Sphere by the simple fact you are placing information about it on my licensed program and denying me access unless I join. Surely what you should be trying to do is give me access to see the benefits of Sphere in the hope that I may decide to make the switch when S1 6 arrives. Unfortunately you give me the News Feed and ensure I can't see it LOL. In marketing terms I think its called "Shooting Yourself In The Foot".

Maybe I am missing something in my old age and please accept I am trying to be constructive.

I should have done a search but I will still leave this up as perhaps someone can tell me why seeing Gregors video without being a Sphere member is so horrendous LOL.

And that wasn't the only thread about this either. Trust me when I say, there are a whole slew of us that aren't happy about the way they do this. We feel jilted as paying customers that keep coming back for more.

They way they do this has been perfect

1. It has insured that I will never do Sphere

2. If S1 becomes subscription only I'm gone

Clearly the right way to do this would be for the Feed to be filtered according to Sphere membership status. And it's doubly stupid, since they already have to do that "filtering" anyway, when somebody clicks on the link.

You would have thought so. It would appear that PreSonus actually wants License Holders to move over to Sphere but does absolutely nothing to encourage it. If that is the case it is a most strange way to promote something :?

I am trying to figure out what I need to spend to bring my version of Studio One current so I can dump Sphere when I upgrade to my new computer.

I will just call this past year a failed experiment.

<TLDR; Just a general ramble on the subject>

It certainly does seem a strange way to encourage people to buy into the Presonus subscription service. I suppose that striking a balance between giving non-members freebies and subsequently annoying the paying subscribers is a significant problem that Presonus marketing face.

I too am considering my actions at the next major release of S1. There are many other subscription services vying for my attention and so far I've not been able to see that the Sphere sub offers any advantage over them other than having the Presonus name stamped on it.

Since I'm not wed to any particular vendor of audio software, they essentially all do the same thing with varying degrees of specialisation and each has its take on a similar set of 'super features', I'm keen to know what other drawcard is on offer. I have been an S1 user since v1 since it provides the tools I need at the price point I find palatable. Learning a different workflow (mostly not much more than new keyboard shortcuts these days) would be inconvenient but certainly not the deciding factor against change for me.

I'm not against subscription services, in fact, I'm an avid user of those that I can enable and disable without penalty to match my cash flow and needs. This gives me access to a wider palette of tools that can change to suit a particular project without ending up with a vast collection of instruments and plugins.

Cheers,
Jason.

I'm gonna have to close this thread by talking about boobs. We don't want things getting out of hand. Especially the boobs.

"?" <= This is my brain.
"boobs" <= This is my brain on advertising.

But seriously, I do not want to rent my software. I see that Reason has gone this direction as have many other companies. In some way it makes sense: you get updates and they get constantly paid to make them. (But what if they're bad updates that break things? Do we get a refund? )

Whatever happens, I'm sticking with software that I can buy — and that works reliably without asking me to constantly be online to prove that I'm the legal owner (BFD3, I'm talking to you!).

Also, I hope I'm on topic because I'm just sort of winging it: like a forum psychic. :)

I think it's more based on my upbringing. At the end of the day, when I finish paying for something I should own it and be able to use it whenever I want. Subscriptions prevent that from happening.

I've heard rumors that the Sphere is more like a cult where they have 8 levels and when you reach their highest level, you get to release an album. But as you're doing that they fill you with a lot of crazy ideas, including that the earth is flat. That's just silly. I've tried walking to the edge of the earth but I never found it. It stayed round. But you can't tell anyone anything these days without them questioning whether it's true or not.

But the Sphere thing is definitely for sure. I know a guy who deprograms people and he's talked to a few ex-Sphere members who made it all the way to level 8 but never got to put out a record. I believe it. I can't prove it though.

But let's keep this between us...okay?

There is no right or wrong and I am not trying to influence anyone.

In June I had to decide on whether to renew my sphere sub.

First an aside. Way back in the 'anals' of time back to v3.5. I remember reading a post from a member called Morticia, who said they were staying on v3.5 as there was nothing of interest in v4 that was worth paying for. I felt the same BUT I decided to go to v4 to help PreSonus receive cash that WOULD allow them to develop things that would be beneficial to me.

I used the same reasoning when I purchased v5 albeit that it too did NOT have beneficial things to me.

I am not a user who takes other people's work and rearranges it and says here is my new song or uses the live show stuff. I spend a huge amount of time learning to play real instruments and then record it, just like I did with a four track except for the rewind time.

So back to the first decision. I stopped the sub. v5 can do what I want.
When v6 comes out I will evaluate it and this time if it does not seem like value for money, I will stay on v5
