Whatever the job calls for. There are some excellent built in FX like Pro EQ, Tricomp and the Expander/Gate that I use all the time. Other times I reach into my toolbox for my trusty UA, iZotope or Waves go-tos.

Cheers!

Same. I've been using the Presonus stuff more lately, but all of my mixes have some Waves, FabFilter, SSL and iZotope.

The built-in effects are pretty good and I use lots of them, especially EQ, compressor and reverb. I think people are too quick to dismiss the built-in stuff. I use VSTs for more creative effects (Trash, Shaperbox etc) and for mixing, mastering and metering (iZotope etc).

Instruments are usually VSTs. The built-in ones are OK but not very inspiring! I often rough out an arrangement with Presence XT then replace the instruments with VSTs if I feel the song is worth spending more time on. Common VSTs in my stuff: Omnisphere, Reason, Analog Lab, Pigments.

Although to answer your question more precisely and more pedantically, I never use anything in Studio One V5 because I'm using V4!

Some of the fat channel state space emulations are remarkably good. Really like mixing with the board emulations in the MixFX slot as well. Pro EQ is on every session. But mostly it’s Fab Filter, brainworx, and UA for me. Most reverbs and effects are physical outboard boxes.

Studio One Pro 5.3, Faderport Classic (1.45), Presonus Quantum, (2) Digimax DP88, Audient ASP800, Quantum 2, BLA Focusrite Saffire Pro 40, BLA HD192, 27-Inch Late 2012 3.2GHZ i5 32 GB 1600 DDR3, 2Tb SSD, bunch of goofy hardware compressors, really dumb EQs, stupid effects units, 10.13.6 High Sierra

I think you'll find people flock to what works for them.
There's plenty of good internal tools/effects, as well as what's out there. Sort of like peanut butter & jelly. One compliments the other.
