This is from August 2021 and Ed is a great guy - these instructions are clear but a tad complex - but you should be able to go from Win 8.1 to Win10 for free

Strongly suggest you do a complete (restorable) image of your machine before starting this so you can get back if something goes south. Macrium Reflect is an awesome imaging tool and they do offer a free option for something like this scenario.

Let us know how it goes.

Cheers!

You still have the XMPlay+LIME option which is completely free. Worst case is that you find out that compressing your file down to 8MB takes away too much from the quality :)

SwitchBack wroteThe installer will show you its default installation directory with the question if you want to change it. You do if it’s the same directory your S1 v2.6.5 is using, but it won’t be :)

Hello. It's almost time to install S1 v.5. I just need some clarification on what you mean by "directory." My S1 v.2. My S1 v.2 is installed here:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\PreSonus\Studio One 2"

So, where is a safe "directory" for S1 v.5? Can it be here?: C:\Program Files (x86)

But not in the "PreSonus" subfolder?

Can it be anywhere? For instance, could it be here? C:\

Thanks!

I usually let the installer put it where it wants, that's the default location.

Any of the (x86) stuff is 32bits and everything is 64bits now pretty much.

You can still run 32bit programs but not 32bit plugins.

OK. I have them both installed now!

I can open my old .song files in S1 2 by opening S1 2 and opening recent files or by going File > Open and navigating to them.

But, if I navigate to the folder with the old .song file and double click it, it opens in S1 5. I tried to right-click the file and choose Open with . . . But it says "keeping using this app" and shows the icon for S1 5.

I tried to look for more apps under Other options, but I don't see S1 2.

Is there a way to right-click the old .song files and open them in S1 2 or do I have to do it the way I described above?

Thanks.

In S1 5, I just exported a 16-bit wav that is 49.3 MB.

At a constant bit rate of 320 kbps, I have a 11.1 MB mp3.

At 256, I have 8.94 MB.

At 192, I have 6.71.

The master was able to get the mp3 of a 16-bit wav to just under 8 MB, presumably in a bid to preserve quality?

Any ideas? If file size is any indication, there's a quality loss when you go all the way down to 192.

Thanks.

There is a dramatic quality loss in any WAV file going to MP3 - that's the nature of the algorithm. You cannot reduce the size of a audio file without making compromises.

MP3 is a subtractive process and it will determine the frequencies and material that is best suited for removal - without overly harming the file in a glaringly obvious way. But make no mistake - material is being removed from your WAV to get it into an MP3.

256 MP3 vs a 192 MP3 - the 192 is a lower quality file. That said - I am certain that most normal ears would never be able to tell.

192 is the absolute lowest I would ever go for an MP3 of an audio file.

Cheers!

Have you tried the ABR and VBR algorithms? These algorithms allocate data across the track depending on where it is needed most to maintain an audio quality level. That way you can get more out of the allowed file size. Works best on tracks with varying track content (talk/song/silence/loud/quiet/...)

I don't know what you're referring to.

It's an alternative metal song. Almost no silence. Drums, bass, and guitars are essentially always going and lots of vox parts too.

Here’s a link explaining VBR and ABR. Compared to CBR (and depending on the audio content) it can yield a higher compression ratio for a given quality level.
