Hi, all out there!

I’m having a hard time not to crack a guitar right about now.
I need to record this small bodied acoustic guitar, and it is finger style playing. well, as you can imagine it is low on volume output. It also sounds best when mic is about 30 cm away. This leaves me to gain up the preamp (audient iD14) pretty damn high to get the peaks to -10 (seems like a good level?).
That also picks up, hrrm, other poop.
Mic: lewitt 140 air

I can get a clean sound up til about -18 peaks. That’s too weak, right?
I would not have this problem with a dreadnought played with plektrum.

What do one do?? Crack a guitar, leave it at -18, look for another hobby... Or what?

Unless the noise is from the (maxed out) preamp no amount of gain will improve the SNR, and -18 can be fine as long as the room is quiet. Otherwise you have three options (I can think of right now):
- get closer to the mic
- get another mic (e.g. a clip-on style condenser or a large diaphragm condenser)
- put a pickup on the guitar (maybe in combination with a mic)

Others may have more suggestions :)

Ok, thanks.

I’ll look into that, sadly move closer to the mic aint an option.
The guitar did not sound much fun closer. Well you might be right about the SNR, so maybe i’ll settle somewhere in between.
