I just watched a tutorial video by Gregor about the improvements in V5 for using external MIDI instruments. It wasn't clear from that whether it is now possible to choose patches (for my Roland workstation and BOSS drum machine) from within Studio One, i.e. like the instrument maps in Cakewalk. Is this now a feature? If so it will be well worth me upgrading; up until now I've held back because I have no use for all the other innovations in 5.

You could always send program change messages to synths to browse their presets.
Its under the inspector.

Unfortunately not. I really miss this feature. It is such an obviously good idea that Cakewalk has had for so many years! As much as I like the program, midi functionality is not one of Studio Ones strong points. It does not even have a midi event list.

Instrument maps allow you to browse and choose patch names from the inspector mycbeats.

I always used Yamaha keyboards, different ones came with a vst plugin that could select voices from the DAW.

Is there something like that for your hardware?

Agree with bruceqld Changing presets or program changes to external synths is hopeless in S1 - yes you could send a PC but not have presets like vst's. Under v5.2 sound variations does allow you to enter external names associated with bank and PC changes.
To date the best and easiest way in S1 is to download a VST from Reaper called something like reamidicontrol - This is so easy to set up and I think the best implementation going.
All you need is a list of your Presets with a number and blank in front.
Eg 01 Piano
02 Bass
The first line is the bank details
The banks can be selected and then the presets are shown.
Using this you do not have to upgrade S1

Studio One 5.5.2 - studio 192, - 1818VSL, - Digimax FS, Presonus HP4 x2 Presonus Notion 6,
Win 10 pro -- I7cpu 16gb. and Z590 Vision D 32GB & 11700
UAD Octo card UAD Apollo Twin USB and Apollo x4
Faderport 8, Faderport classic. Atom SQ

Not sure if everyone is aware of this website it will convert Cakewalk Instrument Definition and Cubase Expression Map files into Studio One Sound Variations. The interface is a bit strange but you just drag the file to the website and it converts to Sound Variation

I found it useful to create Sound Variations for my external midi gear.

User Soundwerx (Rob) made a handy utility for emulating Cakewalk's instrument definitions patch picker:
viewtopic.php?f=151&t=30774&p=181558#p181558
But I don't know if he was thinking of updating it for Studio One 5.
