I’ve been running my Maschine MK3 as not only a MIDI controller device, but an audio interface (with balanced 1/4” TRS cables between the MK3 and my Yamaha HS monitors). My monitors are a little hissy, but not really that noisy. Would it be better to upgrade to balanced XLR cables? If so, that leads me to my next question... My Maschine MK3 line outputs (for the speakers) are 1/4” TRS types, but do most audio interfaces similarly go out as 1/4” TRS but into XLR on the monitors? I wanted to be sure before I buy the cables because I want to have the right cables for future audio interfaces as well. Also, any recommended/reliable cable brands that anyone could suggest?
I appreciate any advice on this. |
As long as it's a balanced cable doesn't matter which kind of connector it uses.

Often the TRS and XLR connectors on the rear of many active speakers, are connected in parallel. Sometimes with the TRS taking priority if both inputs are being used. Either connector is often feeding into the same balanced input circuitry. Its just a matter of choice. The manual for your active monitors should confirm.
One signal path is not superior to the other. XLR connectors on active monitors usually default to line level input signals. As do the TRS connectors.

Just make sure the cables to your HS monitors are properly prepared. I have HS monitors and they emit no noise at all. Make sure you have no short on your RTS, or XLR points. Do a continuity test and also check for shorts. If there are any, it's wired incorrectly. Sometimes cables are improperly set up, and look the part, but are not.

There are good quality TRS to TRS cables available. HOSA make them various lengths. Measure the distance required and get the right length to suit.
I also have a pair of HS7's as my secondary monitors and they are dead silent for me too when not playing. I agree with Lokeyfly in that some cheaper cables can be suspect and incorrectly wired. I have encountered it for sure. Especially in cheap stage boxes/multicores made in China.
