When the SO 5.2 update became available I was very pleasantly surprised to see how key switches evolved into the new Sound Variations feature. But I noticed 2 things that are in my opinion bugs, and I wonder if anyone else can reproduce this, or experienced similar problems.

1) Open a SO5.1 project in SO5.2 that already has key switches defined on some (or all) of your instrument tracks. In my cases these key switches where gone - removed as if they never existed. One other forum user commented something similar happened to him/her.

2) This one might be hard to reproduce, but I had to reinstall my Windows PC yesterday and reinstalled everything including SO5.2. I opened a SO5.2 project from a few days earlier and the sound variations from my VSL instruments are all gone, while those of other instruments (Spitfire for example) are still there.

Since VSL is the first to support this new type of automatic articulation integration its interesting to see it only happened on those tracks. Opening the Sound Variations window from a midi event shows all available key switches from my VSL instrument, but the key switches in the midi event themselves (in the Sound Variations lane) are gone.

Of course I can now start to put everything back - but its quite a hassle, and since there are already two scenarios in which this happened I am not sure this won't happen again in a different context.

Thoughts?

I noticed something wonky with articulations in my horn arrangements, too. Not sure if it was me to blame for something I accidentally did, or whether this is some kind of default behavior that's maybe messing with my existing tracks. I had those parts written and finalized before we got articulations switching in S1.

I found that on some tracks I had the original KS articulations and then also an accompanying new "variations" track which did not mirror at all what was in the KS MIDI track. Luckily, the switching seems to prioritize the MIDI KS and not the new variations sidetrack, so my performances survived that ordeal.

There may also be issues where cutting or merging might cause notes to extend beyond borders, or be cut off entirely. Not entirely sure yet. Still in the infancy stage of exploring this feature.

But there does seem to be something unexpected going on.

Can anyone tell me what the file structure is for sound variations? I'm trying to setup NI Symphony Series and struggling to understand how 'presets' and folders work between libraries and SO songs. Thanks.

OK, after playing around with this, this is what I've found.
I bought my Komplete11 Ultimate packeage when Kontakt was nearing the end of Version 5. Komplete versions after this have Kontakt version 6, and consequently I only have Kontakt Player 6 as a free version (which I needed when I bought 'Dominus' choir package). It seems you have to be careful that whatever version of Kontakt you use, the sound variation templates won't open in another version ie. If you load a preset '.nki.' from your library and open it in Kontakt Player 6, then create a sound variation for it, then you have to open all other 'nki' instruments in Kontakt Player 6 for the sound variation to be seen and opened. I already have an orchestral template (Studio One song) with Kontakt instances using Kontakt 5 of which I have the full version. I was trying to amend some of these instances when I noticed this. When you open 'Explorer' to see where the sound variation resides, it takes you to C:/ User / Username / Documents / Studio One / Presets / User Presets / Key Switches / UACC........In this location I've added the following ..../ NI Symphony Series / Woodwind / and can then see the sound variation icons 'Flute Studio One NEW' and 'Oboe Studio One NEW'. However, when I open up Studio One, the only folders I see in the preset drop down menu are 'NI Symphony Series' and 'UACC'. There seems to be something not quite working here......I think it's something to do with the different 'Kontakt' versions (ie my full version 5 and free Kontakt Player version 6).
Anybody else struggling?

I made up a bunch of presets using the old version, 5.1.

So there they are, they are all simple so don't need fancy stuff.

SVPresets.jpg

They're from different instruments and I can use them on different instruments.

I haven't got the Kontakt player installed though, using Kontakt 6.

So your presets don't show up on every instrument? Or just that player?

Haven't seen a track without them.

Maybe some pics?

I think I'll make a separate posting to describe my problem. Thanks Al

For anyone else having this problem:

There is a short cut in Keyboard Shortcuts > Search Key and you will see the Event > Convert KeySwitches to Sound Variations.

Assign a key and hit that.. your Sound Variations reappear.

No need to create a Keyboard Shortcut, you find this command in the Action menu in the Editor.

Sound Variations and Key Switches are not the same thing, that's why < 5.2 songs don't necessarily convert Key Switches to Sound Variations. There are some few things that Sound Variations can't do what was possible with Key Switches (for example stacking them on top of each other).

That's why "old" Key Switches usually still appear as notes in the Piano View. However, you can convert them manually by using the command. This will automatically add the correct values to the different Activation Sequences.
