Starting to get the hang of it using custom sound variations layering them on top of each other :)

Hi everybody,

a few notes on the current Sound Variations system (introduced in Studio One 5.2 / 5.3):

ericma2 wrotePresonus changed the articulation function. Can't seem to stack the key switches on top of one another like we used to. It was good to able to do this because you can see what the keyswitches are with a quick glance (Root keyswitch and secondary on top of each other) . Now they're scrunched together. 🤷‍♂️

Tacman7 wroteThings have changed, I'm not able to stack variations apparently.
It's true that "normal" Sound Variations can't currently be stacked. This is a feature request for the future. However, there's a workaround (sdinoia has already posted a screen shot): If you set these Sound Variations to "momentary", then you can put them on top of each other. It's not a very elegant workaround because captions of momentary Sound Variations that are overlapping are currently cut off (which I hope can be improved in the future) - but it works. And I think it's still a better option than creating Sound Variations for any possible combination of articulations / "note on" events.

There have already been some improvements to momentary Sound Variations in version 5.3 and 5.4 - and they will hopefully get some further improvements in the future.

ericma2 wroteStudio One and VSL Sound Variation integration is top notch!
Glad to hear that!

ericma2 wroteBut unfortunately I use Vienna Ensemble Pro on another computer hosting all my VSTis. That's why I've been creating my own.
Yes, Vienna Ensemble Pro does not forward data sent through the Sound Variation API yet. But they have already announced that it's definitely on their list of things they plan to add in the future.

ericma2 wroteOnly thing is Studio One has no option in loading keyswitch files unless you delete the Studio.settings which forces Studio One to rescan presets and certain settings on the next start up. Not the best way to do things but it is what it is for now.
That's not true: "Re-Index Presets" is the command that scans all locations for new or updated preset files - including Sound Variation files (.keyswitch) in the user folder. You find this command on the Home tab of the browser:

If you like, you can also assign a keyboard shortcut to this command.

sdinoia wroteIt's cool that you can start from scratch to build a custom sound variations setup for custom VSL presets, but it looks like once you save the preset you can't edit it anymore, is this a bug?
It's not a bug but a side effect of the way Sound Variations are stored. The current set of Sound Variations (just as any other kind of presets in Studio One) are stored with the song (that means that if you modify your Sound Variations map and it won't affect older songs that were created with a previous version of the map). But it also means that there's no direct link to the Sound Variation preset in the user folder - so once you close the window or select a different track in the arrangement (so the Sound Variation map changes), the "Update" option won't be available anymore.

This does not mean you can't update your preset anymore: You just need to click "Store" and point Studio One to the existing file.

Tacman7 wroteJust saw this vid about using cubase patch scripts/expression maps to populate sound variations.
That could really be interesting with external hardware.

Will this bring back program changes?
That was the idea :)

Thx for the explanation Lukas!
For now as long as i use VST2 version of the Synchron player it seems that i can successfully build and edit custom sound variations for the Synchron player, including stacking them on top of each other.
Once the maps are created and your patches in Synchron don't change, then it seems that VST3 version can successfully use those stored sound variation maps created with VST2 version (but not editing them).
What i wonder now is if it's ok to just use the VST2 and if it's gonna be supported in the future since Steinberg is phasing it out in favour of VST3.

ericma2 wroteYeah I'll try to figure out a better way to explain it. Maybe I'll make a video... been wanting to do something like that for a while. I'll let you know. It's getting late and I was battling with some weird issues in a session. I'm gonna crash before I go crazy.

That sounds great. I really appreciate it!! :+1

Here you go if you're still wanting a better explanation. My first youtube video so hopefully I got the point across!

Hi, ericma2.
I just found this. Awesome and thanks a lot!!
But the new method looks more complicated than the old method. Your description has no problem. It's Presonus thing. I don't understand why they changed like that.

Huh? How could you do that? Are you still staying with the old version?
If not, could you explain how to do that, please?

In the sound variation editor you see I created a new variation for C1.

In the action sequence bottom right you see I added other notes to trigger.

So with that sound variation hitting C1 on the keyboard would trigger C1, -C2, and D0.

Just hit add button to add additional notes.

you need to use vst2 so you can customize the sound variation presets and check on "momentary" on the sound variations you want to use as stacked on top of the main ones
