MIDI Editing and Automation Nonsense

Presume its me but I have had constant workflow issues with MIDI recording and editing. For example:

1. I record some chords and notes from my keyboard using an organ sound (Reason Rack used). I then go back and record/overdub some Modulation wheel movements which simulates the Leslie on and off on the same track as the MIDI notes. Playback on those Arranger sections works perfectly, the Modulation wheel activated on the Reason Rack organ patch. Presumably the automation Mod Wheel data is recorded on a separate layer.

2. I try and copy that section to another Arranger section - but only the MIDI notes are copied, not the Mod wheel Automation information. Why not? Something to do with the layer?

3. I attempt to Merge the data on the track - but still it copies only the notes, not the Mod wheel. I presume it is the same for pitch bend.

4. The only soultion I can find is to Unpack Layers To Tracks, which places the Mod Wheel automation data on a separate track - the original track remains.

5. I then copy the original section to another Arranger section which only copies notes.

6. I then move the Unpacked Layer Mod Wheel data section to the notes only section in 5. above - and this seems to work with the notes and the Mod Wheel data in the new Arranger section now merged together.

But this seems a really clunky workaround - anyone know what is going wrong here? Why should I need to do this rather than a simple Option drag copy to another section?

Trying to answer question #2:
I've run into this before... trying to add a parameter that's not allowed per the instrument. But I'm not sure if this is the same thing for you?

Per the manual:
Manually Add and Edit a Part-Automation Envelope

Click on the Parameter tab to choose a parameter to view and edit in the Part Automation Lane. By default, Velocity, Modulation, Pitch Bend, and Aftertouch (Pressure) are available.

To add a new automation envelope to the Part Automation lane, select Add/Remove from the list to open the Automation dialog. This window is identical to the Automation dialog mentioned in the Automation Envelopes On the Track section of this chapter.

Alternatively, you can edit the parameter of the desired instrument, then click on the hand icon in the top left parameter window and drag the parameter to the Music Editor to add a Part Automation envelope for that parameter to the Instrument Part.

The parameters that you can add to the Part Automation lane are based on the virtual instrument to which the Instrument Track that contains the selected Instrument Part is connected. Only those parameters for which an automation envelope does not already exist are available.

Editing Part automation envelopes is nearly identical to editing Track automation envelopes, as described in the Editing Automation Envelopes section of this chapter. The one exception is that if you press [Alt]/[Option] on the keyboard when using the Paint tool to draw an automation envelope, you can draw straight lines of any length, which only use two envelope points.

It is possible to view and edit two different parameters in separate Part Automation lanes. Click on the two Part Automation Envelope buttons to the bottom left of the Part Automation lane to show/hide the two Part Automation lanes. Any written Part automation is read, regardless of whether it is currently being viewed in either Part Automation lane.

Thanks for reading and replying but this is not my issue - recording the automation data as a separate overdub works fine on the MIDI track, and I can edit it as per the parameter tab. It works. But it is then trying to copy that MIDI event plus the Mod Wheel Automation data to another section by Option drag that does not work. That is the problem.

Hello, I have the exact same problem. Did you ever find a solution to the problem?

So the problem you're having is moving midi with automation?

When you copy events in arranger view it will copy automation.

There's also a setting about copy automation: this is good to go through every once in a while:
