Is there a way to create mute groups in Studio One? I want to be able to group channel muting but still be able to adjust levels independently.

+1.
Not so much just "Mute Grouping" but selective grouping that covers most things, not just mute. That's one of the older track grouping FR's. Here's one example from Reaper, a few different workstations do this or similar and it's been on the Cubase FR list for about 15+ years... Reaper can be a really confusing product at times but they've covered some of this kind of stuff really, really well. They kinda copied what PT does with some differences... But Reaper has the group matrix, which is pretty nice, a matrix where you can just go in and see all of your groups and add / remove things to/from multiple groups... |
Good workaround! Just a heads up, this is a very old posting. Studio One now has mixer mapping from v 5, so you can now select exclusive mutes only, for whatever recallable maps you need. I know Lawrence amd myself often brought up mixer maps only to finally see it come into fruition. Yay!

I guess I don't remember being bothered by that at the time, I just made some groups and I can mute and solo them now.

Same here. What Mute groups I need can be had by my muting and globally unmuting. Groups come into play when one needs to do that in multiple instances. Switch orchestral sections off, backing vocal tracks, horns, etc. Busses can do that just fine as davidthames1 mentions, or with Mute groups or even scenes. I think it's biggest practicality would be with orchestral things.
The other day I was getting a little too much short delay from multiple staccatto guitar tracks. I muted some of them out and it opened up so much more of the rhythm (of course the opposite could have happened). What I found was I wanted to switch that on and off at times, musically. Doable globally as mentioned, but it would have been ideal to use mutes additionally elsewhere as needed. That's where group Muting would have shined, or at least been a viable option. I guess at some point is it a matter of keeping up with the Jones' such as Cubase and other feature rich DAW's that run the risk of over taxed and over optioned workflow. I sure hope not. 🙏 Studio One's use of bus routing, or mixer snapshots with an emphasis on muting already work just fine at least in most practical applications.

If I open a send you can still hear the eg wet reverb. |
Yes, the downside to a Send if it's muted at the mixer (channel) group, and not the track. Not sure but it might be worth creating a track group and muting that group on a whole?
I meant to check that last night but got caught up with a project going on. I'll have another go at it. Sometimes in a pinch for better or worse, ill mute several tracks. Then switch the global Mute off and on. That's pretty common for my needs but mmv of course.

Thing is: my needs are a bit odd. I make dub mixes where I frequently mute and unmute tracks and open and close fx sends.
Bussing tracks and muting the bus works as a a mute group workaround, but if I open the wrong send a real desk would mask this mistake. I just need to avoid opening a send on a muted track, that's all really. A bigger problem for me is that I can't create feedback loops in Studio One, so I bought myself a UCM1820 and am testing that now. Bit silly really, I'm just patching out 3-10 directly into in 1-8, all because Presonus can't be arsed with this feature request :( |
No, I get it dub mixes,or even progressive which is a lot of my material requires creative experimentation that's not often the norm. Even on delays, I may create them based on snipping the waver, Into further events to capture something in my head, reverse it, etc.
Pro Tooks or even Reaoer do this rather easily because the returns, audio and MIDI are quite literal when set up. That's not to say Studio One can't, but since a lot of the routing path is fixed in the architecture. Mostly a convenient thing, but sometimes not really limiting, but you have to drill down.

In know that Ableton and Reason can do it. Logic can too, but I'm not on a Mac.
I've switched to Ableton for mixing, even though I've always made my riddims (as we call it in dub) in Studio One but I'm moving back because I miss the Studio One Mix Engine Effects. I've bought a UMC1802 to test it and it works, I've bought an old Roland SDE-2000 which I still need to pickup in Holland so I'll have some sort of hybrid setup. The mute groups issue is one of the last things I'd like to solve. |
Hi slacknote,
There's all kinds of switching, and likely muting possibilities from software plugins such as from Blue Cat Audio or perhaps Melda, so have a look there and you'd likely be able to do what you need all within Studio One, alone. Of course if that fits your needs. Good luck! Lokey

VCA channels comes with its own selection and FX pros and cons. It's not the mute/solo solution as discussed though mmv. It's also an old thread on top of a very old thread. Just as a heads up.
