Hey all,
I completed this song, and I'm very happy with the results, as Studio One never disappoints in that process. Something new though is, I'd lake to create another rendition of the song. To clarify, the original song now is an ambient piece with no percussion. The rendition I'd like to add is this song again as "revisited", adding in some syncopated rhythm, along with guitar.

The intent then is that ill promote both songs to the Project page and any updates to each song would be kept seperate. So before I commit, I'd like to hear someone who has done this, and knows the pitfalls/strategies of saving, save as, save to new version, etc.

In short, and I'll leave this breif, the Studio One manual provides little to nothing regarding save as new version.
A few semi helpful videos from Obedia describe a little on save as new version. However, it's more on saving mix versions. In my "rendition" save, I'll be adding more tracks, yet I'd like to keep the whole new folder with all of the tracks. Not just what "Save As" does which is start a new folder, but retains the original pool of tracks in the first (original song folder).

Now, I may opt to Save As, within the original song folder, which might keep things tidy, but perhaps not promote properly to the Projects page? Or is there just a better way to keep the two songs as two seperate entities, with two folders.

So if anyone has "been that route before", I'm all ears on your suggestions.
Thanks!

Original song title: "Star so Far"
New rendition title: "Star so Far, revisited" (added rhythms and guitar)

Watching one of Joe Gilder's Presonus Home Studio Corner vid's, he does mention that in Project page, each song promoted is from a unique file (pretty obvious, but helpful), so I'm probably good with the simple [save as], even though I know the save as uses the original cache folder.. The bottom line is, I just want to ensure that I can update either song, and have it reliably show up in the Projects Page. There's likely a few ways to do this, though no help from the manual, over some pretty important save conventions.
Any info anyone wishes to add, appreciated.

P.s I think the best two possibilities may be......
. Save to new folder should be the best course, as it will have all of the previous subfolders of the song that have to do with that version.

Or the default "Save As", where Studio One defaults to selecting the location, creating a new .song file within the existing song folder. That way the original cache folder is still built up in one folder, yet everything is under the one folder.

I think if I were creating a whole new song (completely new title, etc.) borrowing from the existing song, then "save to new folder" would be the way to go.

Still have to learn about "save to new version". **

* I know this isn't a terribly exciting read, yet it has to do with one of the most fundamental parts of altering ones song file(s) and largely why posters often do not know why they are missing files. Wish the manual writing people were sitting in on the conversation. ;)

**Aha..... save to new version creates a folder containing a history. Similar to save As, but the history (with its description) is viewed from within the Studio One program.

In case anyone is interested, this is without a doubt, the best, most concise video I've ever come across for information on various ways and their conditions for saving  within Studio One (still!). I've used and recommended it for years now. Even though it is from Studio One 2.5, Chris goes through quite literally naming the files in reference to their usage, and displays those file and folder conditions.  Invaluable. It leaves every other video on that topic in the dust.
IMO, a must read.....uh..er....see.

Hi Jim.

In the scenario you described, I would simply do a Save As and name the song differently.
Then I could bring in both songs to Project if needed.
Not a problem to manage either.

THIS is the video you want to watch. These features went through a pretty major update in version 4.1.2...

Yeah man. That was my first guess as well. I thought of some different possibilities. The save as within the same song is the way I always save to the song progress anyway by creating a suffix 1a, 1b, 1e..2a, 2b, ... after the title, and perfect for leaving those breadcrumbs. I could rename, and even when needed, export a mixdown. Then simply import that file into the Project page so it would keep a seperate entity that way.

Guess, I'm just looking at the option of developing the two songs in parallel.

What I thought I might try as an experiment (and I did back up :) ) is [Save to new folder]. What I found is Studio One prepares the new song (it should be renamed at this juncture) to the same song folder, waiting for the user to create a new folder, name it and save (in or out of the folder would be up to the user). If you don't create a new folder and save with just the renamed song, S1 sees the existing cache folder and does not try to create a new one. Learned this by trial and error. So I created a new folder with new song name and once I hit save, I could see the few seconds of activity S1 is doing which is creating a new cache, and media folder, along with the new song file. I think that's a good thing in that any new updates to "Star so Far - Revisited" should build in that new song folder and the new cache folder within. If I update the original song in parralel, it should by all rights build if I start from the last original version.

If it all works this way, I'll post a thumbs up which will indicate the Project is identifying the two songs.

Thanks Jim!

Thanks Darren,
Going to view that now. Yes, saw something on a v4 update to this, so I had better understand what that is.
Will have a view, shortly. As it is about saving and restoring versions, I'm thinking that might be best as choosing different mixdown, for example, as I think only one version within a song will promote to the Project page (as of the old save to versions way). But perhaps that has changed.

Marcus' video is good for some different reasons, so thanks for sharing as I didn't know about S1 now saves clip gain information and not just automation when sending AAF to Pro Tools. I like that he proofed that out as well in the video.

His usage for the save to version is really Incremental use, and that's fine. He does point out towards the end of about archiving a snapshot of the existing song and saving that as a new version, with a new name. Unfortunately, theres no mention of working with two songs in parallel. That however wasn't his reason for creating an otherwise informative video about versions and the new S1v4 changes. I enjoyed hearing the points made.

So I'll roll with the parralel thing for now and see how it goes into the Projects Page, how Projects maintains tracking and updating as well. Will keep you all posted as an FYI if you should encounter feeding the Projects Page this way, or having some other similar use.
