Hello,
Is it possible to use 2 midi keyboards at the same time with Studio One 4? Basicly, I want to play Shine on you Crazy Diamond and with the intro having the prominent strings and solo, how do I achieve playing these parts live at the same time? I can only select one track at any time to my knowledge. This is only for my own amusement as a bedroom player rather than a live venue!! Any advice is appreciated! Davie |
Yes you certainly can. Firstly we need to know how they are connected.
Via USB or 5 pin MIDI connectors and a midi interface. (And if its this way, are they connected to separate MIDI IN ports on your midi interface) Lets start with the above two options. I assume you have them both installed correctly in the external devices area and they are both working. USB. (Note: Selecting tracks has nothing to do with this. Any number tracks can be either input monitored or engaged into record at once.) When you engage a midi instrument track into record (or input monitoring) it defaults to ALL INPUTS. So if you engage two tracks to record/input monitor set for two different virtual instruments then yes both keyboards will mix and play both of them at once. Not much use. But each midi track can also select just a particular keyboard. Engage both tracks into record/monitoring but instead of ALL INPUTS set each one for the desired keyboard controller. (This is done with the track input source setting) Then each keyboard will only play the required virtual instrument. MIDI Same here. Instead of ALL INPUTS set each track to the desired MIDI IN port. If you are merging the two keyboards into a single MIDI connection there is still a way to separate them. But I guess you may be doing one of the above two options. If you are merging the two controllers and sending a single MIDI signal into Studio One, then it can still be done using midi channels as a way to separate them. I will explain if this is in fact your method. Its less common these days though.

Very comprehensive answer!
About selecting a track davidbegg wroteI can only select one track at any time to my knowledge. True, but you can monitor all the tracks you want, once it's setup it will monitor(play through) the input it's set to if the monitor button is pressed.

It might be doable with one keyboard too, unless you need full keyboard range to play on for each part.
Many keyboard have split functionality. You select a key where it's divided into two sections, one sending on a separate midi channel. It can even be done of keyboard does not allow split. You can have a midi plugins that split from a certain midi key into two midi channels - then you can transpose either as needed to fit the part best. I'm not familiar with what is shipped with StudioOne, so can't say if part stock plugins or not. But very common thing to do. |
As the subject title suggests the two keyboard approach is the simplest and the best option. (Assuming you have two controllers of course) Best in that it allows for the full range of notes to be used from both keyboards, simplest from just selecting the right input source for each track. Also from my experience it is nicer to play two separate keyboards (driving two sounds) as opposed to one.
Using just one keyboard can be done two ways. The controller must allow for creating two zones transmitting on two midi channels. But this will require two external devices to be setup for the one keyboard. Instead of ALL channels being selected for the external device (Keyboard) just one channel for the controller will need to be setup in each of the two external devices. Two tracks will need to be setup feeding the two virtual instruments and both input monitored. Each track will have to have the right input source selected. (Same controller but different midi channel option) It does work but will require extra work to set up. There will be a limited octave range for each zone. Using one keyboard on one midi channel can also be done. Only one external device is necessary and can be set back to ALL channels again. Then one creates two tracks feeding the two virtual instruments and both input monitoring. However the Note FX (Midi filter) can be employed on each track. The ranges for each half of the controlling keyboard can be set. The octave ranges may be out though (with one or both halves) and will require the transposition setting on each track to be readjusted. The same issue of limited octave range for each half will still exist. This is also a fiddly approach and will require some setting up also.

Thank you very much to all for taking the time to reply I do appreciate it!!
I currenty have a Yamaha PSR E363 and a M Audio32 midi keyboard and are both USB. The midi keyboard will be upgraded to a Nektar Impact LX61+ as I believe this works well with Studio One. As I have the USB Audiobox so it is possible to connect the Nektar midi keyboard via midi cables but I am not sure whether there is any benifit to this or not, but that is for another day. I will have a try and see how I do and let you all know thanks again!! Davie |
Nektar doesn't have legacy midi ports.
I never know when I'm going to use something and with legacy midi ports you can plugin a keyboard and start playing. USB would require you to reboot your DAW software to use something. If you leave it plugged in all the time then no problem with USB.

Thanks for letting me know!!
I have a problem straight away which I expected because I am anything but technical. Both midi keyboards work, but only 1 at a time. All this confuses the hell out of me to the point it seems easier just to give it a rest Can anyone explain a step by step guide please as I do want to get my head around this! |
I assume you have got the two external devices installed (keyboards).
Set up two Instrument tracks. Install a virtual instrument into each of them. Each Instrument track can choose various inputs. Usually the inputs are set for ALL Inputs. But you should also see the individual controllers as an option. i.e. the M32 should be listed there also and the PSR as the other option. Select the M32 as the input source for one track and the PSR as the other. Put both tracks into input monitoring. Both keyboards should work and play their respective virtual instruments at the same time.

Jemusic,
Thank you so much for your help that is it working now!! It is a harsh learning curve when you dont know what you are doing that is for sure. Davie |
Great to hear! I see the M32 is a rather smallish keyboard as well. The PSR may not be able to send pitch bend or after touch. In fact I don't think the M32 can send after touch either. But these are only minor niggles.
I have got two 61 note keyboards set vertically above each other and love playing both of them at once. Once you start learning some independence between the hands I find you can create and play things this way that does not quite happen when you overdub two parts one after the other. You can certainly put both tracks into record too and record both parts at once.

Yeah it is quite small and prob not the best but I only mess around and have fun but I was looking at getting a 61 key one which would be just a midi with the note bendingoption aswell.
Ive came to realise the Yamaha is good to a point and in fact a proper midi keyboard would actually suit my needs more!! I was looking at the Nektar Impact LX61 as a lot of Studio One users found it worked well, initially I was going to get an Arturia one but it sounded like there were more problems than it was worth. It sounds like a good set up you have and it is a lot of fun too, I managed to record the Intro for Shine On it is rough and ready as I aint the best player!! The latest Arturia controller is very good in fact. I attended a clinic recently and was impressed. The build quality is much higher. Plus you get a whole lot of cool virtual stuff like Analog Lab that comes with it. It has a higher level of integration with Studio One than a normal controller does. Check it out before making any decisions. They have completely redesigned it and used much nicer keybed too. The pads can trigger Impact XT plus all those faders and knobs can be mapped to Studio One.

The last Floyd CD (Endless River) features the whole album of instrumentals with just one song at the end. Some don't like it but personally I love it. If you are fan of those big cinematic Floyd intros you will love Endless River because it is ALL like that!
David Gilmour actually explained it well by saying it was a celebration of the instrumental style of Floyd not so much a song driven thing. Richard Wright laid down may parts for this CD before he died so he is all over it. But they did have to finish it all off too which would have been quite an undertaking. I also feel it is some of the best Gilmour playing ever! He rips on this CD.

That Arturia midi looks great but maybe beyond my budget!!
Yeah I have it, I have them all and was fortunate enough to see them on that tour!! The Division Bell is one of my favourite and some of the best work both David Gilmour and Rick Wright done. It reminds me a lot of the Wish You Were Here album where both are prominent. A lot didnt like the Endless River, I guess they expected it to be like the Division Bell and were dissapointed. Im glad it was released though because Rick was exceptional. Him and Ray Manzarek from the Doors are my personal favourites and Freddie Mercury wrote some classics with Queen too! |
