I’m moving toward a more hybrid approach. I own a couple of pieces of outboard gear & am planning on buying more.
I would really appreciate any advice, tips & experiences you all could share concerning utilizing pipeline XT. It’s actually surprising how little information is out there. Thanks

I use it quite often with external compressors and eq on tracks as well as external stereo eq and bus compression on the output two track. Also use it on project page with final "album" burns or digital distribution. I don't do anything fancy and it is mostly live band type of audio but if I can be of any help, feel free to ask.

Thank you I’m currently using it to pipeline in a dbx 160a on Kick & Snare. Wow I am thinking of using it to pipeline in my VLA II sort of like a LA2A on orchestral stuff. I’m hoping to pickup a 1176 & Pultec clone pretty soon. I’m really liking this hybrid workflow so far.

frank.crow wroteThank you I love the hybrid approach. Using Pultecs, 1176's and 2a's, Lexicon, etc without significant latency on tracks (either when recording or afterward processing) gives me nice results*. I am convinced that I get a better result than strictly in the box with VST's only. On the two track I use a VLA II in line with a Black Lion AM/CHA1 Equalizer followed by a TK BC1-S It may be simply psycho-acoustics and in a blind test I may not be able to reliably tell the difference from top notch VST's, but it gives me greater confidence and as I said, more the results I am looking for. Besides, twiddling real knobs is always fun ![]() (*Truth in advertising edit - except for the Lexicon, they are all clones. )

You have the VLA II as well? What do you think about it? Up until now I was using it as the 2nd compressor in my 2 compressor Bass DI Chain. Basically I used the Art Pro Channel II followed by the VLA II. The tubes gave me a buttery almost chorus type tone.
I’m curious to see if these benefits will translate using the pipeline XT method on other tracks.

I am a fan of using multiple compressors in-line with minimum ratio and thresholds rather than a single compressor with more drastic settings. (Also a fan of editing event clips to assure a more even volume level so that the compressor adds a coloration more than acting as a volume control)
I swapped out the original tubes of the VLA II for some NOS and I am quite please with it as an initial compressor in the chain. I don't hit it hard but it contributes to a more hefty smooth signal for further processing. My favorite compressors at the moment ( that I can afford ![]() All the outboard eq's I use are for broad equalization changes. Anything surgical I think VST's in the box are easier to deal with and do a better job for pinpointing problem areas.

Right on I’m so glad you mentioned the Klark products, those are the clones I’m looking at. My friend turned me onto the Pultec and when I further researched I found the 1176.

frank.crow wrote Absolutely - any time. Can't vouch for the KT1176 since I don't have one but the KT-2a is sweet
