I concur. Most professional studios have a closed rig system. If not, you run a lot of unreasonable risks. Having your studio pc/Mac open to the outside world is foolish and unnecessary.

Very old post from 2018. I don't think anyone would disagree with your comment. I thoroughly subscribe to the same practice. 😇 👍

From Preferences/Advanced/Services you get the option to disable various remote services S1 uses. I never tried but wouldn't be surprised if disabling some of these will prevent S1 from checking in with your account from time to time to make sure that you're a licensed user. So don't be surprised if at some point S1 refuses to start up unless you allow it to ring home. All experimenting at your own risk of course.

Most pro.studios cut off the internet because they don't want their customers to install crap on the PC systems..When they need or want to update their computers they will have the internet on and update everything (after doing a backup).

Rince and repeat.

If it's just a home setup, you really don't need to take those kind of precautions, just don't install Quake on your machine, or download porn, or whatever. Backups are always important however.

But hey if you prefer to never update your machine, then turn off the internet, and don't ever update it, throw away the WiFi key, nothing wrong with that, until one day you want to update a piece of software and you don't bother updating other software that may have certain library dependencies, and then you wonder why your old plugins aren't working.

I don't need separate PC's, I multiboot and run several different windows installations on one PC which keeps everything away from my DAW that isn't related to audio recording. Yes I keep the porn away from my DAW!

I think the issue was that cutting the internet doesn't keep S1 from trying to reach out, sometimes/maybe/arguably impacting other processes when it does. Fiddling with the process preferences may reduce or even postpone the need for S1 to reach out but it must/will at some point. I never fiddled around with the process settings myself but if this S1 behaviour was bothering me then that's where I would be looking :)

I don't think there is any way to turn off polling Presonus's servers, or to reduce it other than not having internet or blocking ports via a firewall. If you do that it probably means periodically it won't start because the authorization will expire eventually.

There is offline authorization however...

Studio One does not upload anything. What happens is that the news feed is requested (if possible) on startup. Also, Studio One and the plug-in scanner (which are separate programs) talk to each over via UCnet, PreSonus' own network protocol.
