To judge by all the comments, and reviews I've read in various places, I'm certain it (FP2 in particular, but all the FP range) is an excellent bit of kit and apparently well-built as well.

I guess I'm gonna have to bow to peer pressure and get one - even if it is of no immediate use to my project at this time, at least I suppose I can practice using it. Y'know, get the muscle memory all set up so I don't have to look at the thing in order to press the desired button.

FP8/16 (maybe in future FP24/32?) will be a thing for - well - the future. I assume that FP2 can work with say FP8 (ie. both plugged in at same time)?

They certainly can. I am running both right now. They are treated as two separate devices. Sure the transport controls are duplicated on both but the great thing is the encoder on one can be doing one thing while the encoder on the other can be doing something else. It is a bit extravagant but it is rather cool though.

They can work side by side of course but I have the Faderport 2018 next to my keyboard controller so I have a lot of control over Studio One while playing stuff in. The new one offers an incredible amount of power. It is way more advanced than the original.

Check the manual. It should be in native Studio One mode but if not do the settings required to put it in that mode. Someone here had some unusual behaviour with their Faderport 2018 and it turned out not to be in native mode.

Check the firmware as well. With Universal Control. It should be 3.03 currently.

Are we talking about the Faderport 2018 V2 firmware only ?

I don't want to confuse the topic but on my UC for the Faderport 8 it says 2.02 and when trying to update the firmware it says that it's the latest.
Sorry if I muddle the OP that is not intended.

OK got my FP2 installed and setup, all seems to be working fine :+1

Um, it's a trifle larger than I imagined - was expecting it to be about half the size.

Not sure what the Universal Control is about - I'm just using what already installed and all seems good to me

Universal Control pays attention to your faderport firmware and its available updates. One can hope it works better than updating Universal Control itself. :-)

Faderport 8 is at a different firmware compared to Faderport 2018. FP8 is currently at 2.02 and the Fadeport 2018 is 3.03.

Mirek Mach is currently looking at what version of UC he is running. Which currently is 2.9.1

Lokeyfly wroteCongrats, Leo!

Thanks, mate! :)

Am noticing that I am beginning at lest to use the FP transport buttons rather than using the mouse. Still use he mouse for other stuff, but at least I'm beginning to learn the FP.

The mouse (and keyboard) are so integral for most everything. Only now with your faderport, you'll have that professional full 100mm fader travel, that is I motorized.
Plus the nice extras.
The Faderport is better now than ever, so you'll be mixing like Alan Parsons in no time (Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon, Wish you were here, Meddle, or Al Stewert - The Year of the Cat, etc).
OK, well with a little and hands on practice.
Enjoy it, Leo!!

It is a huge benefit for tactile control.

Maybe, if the price comes down some in the future (from £175). Do you think that is liable to happen, and over what sort of period - I realize that is pure speculation, but someone might know (read: have a clue) :)

My experience has been that it's usually best to buy good gear -- the right gear for YOU and your situation -- when you actually need it, and not worry too much about what may or may not happen to the price in the future. Sometimes it goes up. Sometimes it goes down. Just buy it because it's a tool you can use TODAY. Whatever happens with the price will happen. And in the meantime, you're actually USING the gear to make your music, instead of fretting about it. Having said that, the price on this unlikely to drop soon, but if you don't need it right away, there are usually deals or promos around the holidays so you might get some discount or bundle. Or maybe not. :-)
