disappointed cause even the chord track and import song are features that I wanted still need the expression maps and better midi features which had more votes on features request.
they are more focus on electronic home studio producers not on depth midi musician or film composers, sad cause I like presonus

Here is my take, copied and pasted from another thread, but this one is more appropriate. TLDR version: mixed bag for me really (some nice stuff, but too little fundamental MIDI items).

Very happy to see a Drum Editor, Track Notes, Import Song Data (kinda like track templates - I'll take it) and even a Step Sequencer as a nice to have. The Chord Detection and Harmonic Editing (or whatever it's called) looks cool, but it seems like more of a "wow" feature versus a practical one (a la Scratch Pads and an Arranger Track without the ability to create playlists of sections). How often would I really shift the chords of pre-recorded audio after the fact in actual production? In reality: rarely to never. You know what's similar that I would have used all the time? Tempo detection of MIDI and audio (without the need for Melodyne). Detecting tempos seems like it'd be even easier to code than detecting chords.

Also my pet peeve of "hey, we'll update our internal DAW products so they're not as good as industry standard products you should already be using like Kontakt and Maschine, in an effort to sell you more third-party content" was clearly in effect with the big upgrades to Presence XT and Impact XT. Nice updates if you use them certainly, but I always wonder who the people are that use DAW-locked instruments. Anything I can't take with me to another DAW, just isn't going to get used as a practical matter.

Nothing new on the MIDI side at all? No Omni mode for MIDI channels? No colored velocities for the PRV? No Smart Tool? No MPE? No Polyphonic Aftertouch? No Notion integration improvements other than generating lead sheets? I'm seriously asking in the hopes that the What's New page is leaving out some of this stuff. Those features are way more fundamental to a modern DAW and virtual instrument/hardware integration than Chord Tracks and Harmonic Editing IMO.

I was super disappointed the Tempo Track didn't get an update either. The ability to change the chords of recorded audio before we can draw tempo curves? Seems like a strange set of priorities.

Based on the little I've seen so far, I'd grade this upgrade as a C-. That may change in due time (particularly if there's some under the radar type improvements or major additions in point releases), but if you told me this morning I'd be as disappointed with 4.0 as I currently am, I'd have told you you're nuts. If there's a more detailed feature-list/change-log than what's on the What's New page, I'd love to see it.

I'll likely hold off on upgrading for the time being and see how things play out in terms of lesser documented features and point releases.

Track and Channel Notepad makes it worth upgrading for me!

OK, just kidding. But the upgrades to Impact and SampleOne plus various other editing changes and the promised ARA2 upgrade make it worth the upgrade price for me. The chord stuff is interesting and might help those learning music theory; and playing with it might generate some new ideas. Also, I hope the improvements to Presence XT don't slow it down even more.

Can someone detail what the "External VST2/VST3" scanner means in a practical sense? One of the stickies says, "fewer plugin crashes." Does that mean on startup? Is it plugin sandboxing of some sort? Faster launch times for Studio One?

Mine activated succesfully now. Just closed it and reopened and activation got past the error.

Also copy-pasting this from another thread with some addition:

Well I was quite shocked too, to see that I would have to pay 150€ for the "upgrade" from SO3 Pro. Although I purchase Studio One 3 Pro last year, there haven't been a ton of updates and most of "my" issues have never been fixed.

For the only reason of "supporting" Presonus I would have been ok with an update price up to 100€ - but not more. I also paid quite a lot for the pro version not too long ago. Not very happy atm.

Just watched the demo video. Not impressed. The update looks more cosmetic than anything else, barely patching in what's been requested for years, like a step sequencer. For me it means, this is a forced update to not fall out of the update cycle.

I'm eager to find out about what has been done that matters to me:
- Has automation improved?
- Console Track Folders, natively, without workarounds?
- Track Sub-Folders?
- Fixed the wanky way of having 3rd party / external sequencers (like Maschine VST) play VST instruments in Studio One? (In 3 this had to be done via "direct input" and is flawed)
- WAI Display?
- Phase and Mono on Console Channel?
- Improvements on Midi Instruments / Control surfaces? LOOOTTS of issues there in everyday use
I could continue with this list for another hour or so, but I fear I know the answer already. No.

I think the release notes ATM read like "hey, you don't need to buy from NI or Ableton, Studio One can do it!" - well, that's not what Studio One is for imo. Studio One is the serious uncle sitting quietly in the corner until needed, then shines with exceptional quality in his dedicated profession: Mixing and Mastering.

1) It is a prototyping tool.
2) many new MID editing features
3) chords and key now are bidirectional. Easy to print chord chart for performing musicians

A separate app for scanning prevents the host from crashing.
No, it is not a separate process for plugins in running mode as that has timing issues.

I pretty much agree with Funkybot on every point of his list. About the Release Notes: Is this really it? That is the complete list? I'm shocked, not trying to bash.

As I said before I was hoping for expression mapping, MPE support, pre-recording for MIDI, all very popular in the feature requests section.

If there was one of those features listed I'dve been quite happy. It's a let down for me, sorry to say. I already bought Scaler if I want to fool around with a chord assistant for example. How much help does a person with a minimum of ability need with drums? Kontakt is the go to sampler, that's not going to change after today.

I too will be waiting before an upgrade, unless I decide to move to another DAW. You can't wait too long for important features, life passes you by.

Hey I really thought I should chime in here.

I currently have StudioOne 3 Professional and I plan to upgrade to StudioOne 4 Professional, and there's no version upgrades on the list of upgrades available. What gives?

To me it looks amazing! I can't wait! I just wish I would have waited about 4 months before buying SO-3. But oh well. I'll get this ASAP.
