Title: "Presonus, you've broken my heart".

Not to be confused with Spooky Tooth's album "You broke my heart, so I busted your jaw." (1973).

Jemusic wroteThat link that SwitchBack pointed to is also interesting. Maybe your laptop is fitted with a 5400 rpm drive. Not sure. Internal sound may also be an issue.

I am running Studio One on an iMac secondary machine and all I know is it is blisteringly fast and runs without a hitch here. It does not even break a sweat with large sessions. The internal drive on my machine though is 7200 rpm and I have a very high quality interface connected as well.

Jpsbuk has allready said that the HD is in fact a SSD.... so...

The new title makes more sense .. it's just a little 'dry' and doesn't go with my 'story' :)

Whatever the subject line though, I think there is some good information here. Once I confirm things are working properly I'll post a summary of what I did.

I think it should include
I finally convinced the boss (wife) that I really needed a new computer to replace my slightly aging laptop and that this new computer would propel me into a new world of musical happiness and fulfillment.

That's the part that caught my attention ;-)

Same here. That's the moment one includes "Oh, and its also really time to add a Challenger "Demon" to put in the driveway.". Just don't mention the 800+ hp. It confuses things. :)

Exactly. Strike, when the iron is hot. Or when the boss is willing to spend.

I'm just a little curious why the OP was putting everything back together to send back, then asks for help.

I guess it's all part of the melodrama. :?:

To get back on track, Jpsbuk, if you got any puzzling moments with your new stuff, put it out here and I will try to help if I can !
I'm quite sure that you have the possibility to use USB-C converters so you can use Thunderbolt 2 or USB 3 or Firewire 800.
On my Mac I can use Firewire 800 to 400 cables and that works for my machine. Im using both 800 to 400 and Thunderbolt 2 to 800 together when needed and the 800 on my Mac is occupied by HD's or similar.
Mind I have an older Mac and your shiny one needs other stuff.
How many USB-C's does it have ?

Thanks Klypeman. I have found it's possible to put together a stack of adapters to go from the USB-C to firewire but by the time you buy all those you're getting near to the cost of a thunderbolt compatible interface :( The mac has 4 x USB-C ports.

As it stands, (further testing in progress), the built-in audio interface is working just fine now. I'll still keep considering the external devices though :)

Seems like the possible culprits were Energy Saver, FileVault and Automatic Graphics Switching. I have changed these from the defaults now and performance is greatly improved. Once I have things stable I might try and test each one of these individually to try and get some better data.

Thanks again for all the support

Three things to help:

1. ASIO4ALL is a crap shoot at best. Its even more crazy to try and run Songs on the internal card
2. Get yourself a proper interface
3. Regardless of what the brains think, get an external drive for writing your Songs and Projects onto.
4. SOME SSD drives are finicky

5. MOST important, keep momma happy as you have to LIVE with her

I use a 5 year old 8GB Mac laptop as a temporary DAW when travelling, it handles Studio One very well indeed, often with quite large projects. So a brand new one shouldn’t have any issues at all.

Unless you’re recording audio into S1, it’s perfectly fine to use Core Audio. An audio interface will make negligible difference to performance if you’re working with VI’s only.

As the guys have said, the biggest bottlenecks will be hard disk speeds and RAM limitations, and how many cores your laptop has.

Then you need to factor in your plugins. Even on powerful system, a CPU intensive reverb can severely affect performance.

I no longer use a Mac,.or.I'd certainly help. I'll keep viewing periodically, if I can assist once your up and running.

So it seems this was all a lovers tiff in the end :)

I now have everything working fine using coreaudio, internal SSD and a few careful choices on settings. (no filevault, no power nap and no automatic GPU switching).

The test song I was using now runs flat at 50% CPU, all 8 cores are perfectly balanced,128 buffer size and there are no nasty cpu spikes :) (This test song is all VST based and also has several instances of Replika running which are real CPU hogs)

Thank you to all who chipped in with help and advice

Sometimes it seems there are 'happy ever afters' .. I even managed to convince the boss to let me swap the new Mac for a newer Mac with a bigger SSD :)
