I'm trying out Studio One 3.

I'd like to record myself practicing a punch.
I want to loop bars 1-6 while punching in only for bars 3-5.
That is, I want playback to begin at bar 1; punch in at 3; punch out at 5, play through 6 and repeat.

Reaper allows independent control of the loop points and time selection. This lets me create a playback loop from 1-6 and a highlight from 3-5. The transport loops and punches in only for the highlighted section.

I haven't found a way to replicate this behavior in SO3.

Any takers?

In S1 you can't handle it the same way because the looping is the recording region, but you can get the same results with an extra baby step in the setup process.

Have your original recording (Bars 1-6) on "Track X".
Select bars 3-5 (Ctrl/Cmd + drag or use the range tool) press "Backspace" (Delete). This will leave you with two empty bars.
Set loop around bars 1-6, be sure Looping in ON (loop marker above timeline should be blue).
Add another track below Track X. (We'll call it "Track Y")
    Turn on "Record To Layers"
Unarm original track, arm Track Y (new track).

Start recording. It will playback Track X (original) and since we have deleted bars 3-5 only your new punch in will be heard during those two bars, and it will be recording on Track Y.

It will record everything you do before/after bars 3-5 too, but you will be looping, and playing as needed. It will keep looping/recording over the 6 bars. You simply ignore all it recorded in the other bars. When you stop recording you'll see all the layers.

Use the S1 Comping system to select the best take from the layers below, promoting them to Track Y.

When you get the take you want on Track Y (selecting among the layers), copy it and paste it into the original track. Adjust the edges as needed. If you play something really interesting in one of the other bars (better than the original) you can promote it and paste it to original track too. Or ignore all the other bars, don't play anything until bars 3-5, your choice.

Takes far longer to type out the details then to do all the steps.

Let us know how it goes!

Thanks, that's a pretty good workaround.

I see no way to mark this thread "answered".

I believe you can change the original title if you wish (since it's your thread) by editing the first post and putting "[Answered]" or something similar at the end of the title.

Also, I really love the comping system in S1, compared to Reapers (which is also pretty good.)

In S1 the final selection is always on the track itself, so we don't have to look up and down to see which audio made the final, and we can hide those layers after we find our best take.

Anyway to get a new feature added like: "Punch In" and "Punch Out" location options in addition to the loop In and loop out already there. This is what Cubase/Nuendo allows to do as standard loop layer recording option. Singing a track and being able to hear the emotion of what was recorded in the loop before the exact punch in is price less to match what your replacing. Then with the loop doing multiple takes to get it just right. Please add this in a future version of Studio One. I just switched from Nuendo to Studio and bought a Studio Live 32S.. so I guess I'm now really committed to Studio One as my DAW :) No going back now.. lol... Love Studio Ones workflow.. except this little one thing I miss.. Best Regards and Stay Safe from Covid.

Welcome to the Forum!

So this would be like instrument mix mode recording for audio?

Loop and punch in are always the same here.

Here's where to request a feature or change and then see if others agree and vote for it...
