I just purchased Antare's Throat Evo plug-in.

Is there a recommended format that works best with Studio One Pro? (RTAS, VST, or AU)
Mac OS v. 10.6.6
2 x 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processor
4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM ram
Bus speed 1.6 GHz
Studio One Pro
PreSonus FireBox
Axiom 66 keyboard

RTAS is for Pro Tools

VST is usually for Window based machines

AU is usually for Mac based machines

The recommended format is VSTs even if you are running a Mac. Most AUs are just VST in a wrapper so avoid the wrapper and go straight to the VST.

Some developers release their VST plug-ins in two versions of VST, that is VST 2 and VST 3. In this case I recommend using VST 3, because this implementation of VST protocol has implemented many improvements. Of course, S1 supports also VST 3.0.

I can only second the VST3 options.

Preferred format in descending order for both PC and Mac:

When I used 32bit Studio One, I had AU support disabled at all at first. I discovered that there are some limitations in Studio One AU support - NI Kontakt multi output doesn't work etc. Then I added it back when I had to use some Airwindows plugins - these are one of few plugins available only in AU format. In general VST worked fine.

When I switched to 64bit version, it changed however. I have several plugins with VST versions crashing in several situations, but AU versions are rock stable. Steven Slate Drums v4 is the most notable example of such plugin. I reported all these to the developers and most of them recommended using AU if possible as "it's generally more stable". Studio One 2.0.4 had a bug which made many (JUCE) VST plugins unusable at all. Again, AU worked fine.

Anyway, YMMV .

Juce bug is fixed in 2.0.5 which is out now. And there are limitations in the AU format that you don't have in VST. But if it works for you, it works right? VST allows me to keep things nice and the same on all my machines (mixed Windows and Mac OS).

It's not about what is better. It's just my personal experience that it's good idea to keep both in the system and in case of problems with one format try another one. Limitations of AU don't matter in majority of cases anyway. Inability to do multioutput in Kontakt is the only one which matters for me personally. And it's not the problem in the AU format either .

I finally disabled my AU support. A couple people have mentioned that NOT mixing plugin formats tends to reduce or eliminate the song close crashes I've been experiencing frequently. I worked a little bit in S1 last night, AU's shut off, and I don't remember experience a crash. But it wasn't a very busy session. We'll see how that works out. I also like the added benefit you get when disabling AU, of not having all my plugins listed twice in my plugin list. Also made it bloated and messy.

There's also the limitation of either sending or receiving MIDI to or from a FX plugin. Can't seem to remember which one it was. It's not about better, just what works best for you.

So true. I've always been pretty pleased with the fact that Studio One on Mac lets you use both AU and VST. Really opens you up to options that some other DAW users don't have because they are limited by a single format. Most plugins are available in at least AU/VST, if not AU/VST/RTAS, but there still is plenty of stuff out there that's AU only or VST only.

That's MIDI output and it's not actually true since Leopard. If that's a problem for you, it's up to plugin developer to update his code to the latest AU specification.

It's not a problem for me as I use VST2 / VST3.
