View Full Version : Firepod Line Outs

So I tried to use my Firepod line outs to run into a sound board for live monitoring (not monitoring of recorded stuff), and got nothing going through. Are TRS cables mandatory for these, or did I just miss the point of these outputs? I was assuming they were basically "thru-puts" of the signals coming into the front.

those line outs are the eight analog outs showing up in your software and not audio-throughs

Crap! Ok, then. If I have a generic sound board with no line outs (but with inserts), what's the best way I can provide monitoring to a band? Snake splitter? And would that cause noticeable signal degredation or hum/hiss? Also, I'm doing roughly 16 channels at a time.

The Firebop/FP10 is capable of routing audio through the output busses on the back (TSR) ONLY if you haven't connected it with Firewire and have the latest FP firmware.

Another thought - what is the possibility of getting decent sound quality using the inserts on a Peavey PV20 mixer (or any mixer, for that matter) as direct outs (plugging a TS cable in only past the first click) and running it into the Firepod's inputs? I'm not sure how good the pre-amps are on this mixer, but it's about the only (free) monitoring solution I have at hand.
I think I'd have to scratch that snake splitter option, since using phantom power in that situation might be an issue - I'd be either feeding it into the mixer or the firepod as well as the mic(s), depending on which one I utilized. Unless I'm mistaken?

But it's worth the shot I think. Are ye looking for just a nice recording or a superb high Q one?

Using a true mic splitter (using a transformer, active or passive don't matter) will work with phantom power. Having just a mic signal split using 2 male connectors conneted (soldered) directly on to a female plug is indeed not wise to do.
A mic splitter is usually quit expensive. Using direct connected y-cable might work with phantom ONLY if you don't use 48v from the mixer but have mic-power on stage for example.

Somewhere in between. Basically, something that sounds professional to the average person/musician, but not necessarily so much to an experienced recording engineer.

I'd go for the line outs/inserts from the board. It'll be cool. Remember, it's POST gain (already amped). I've done it, and it's great.
OR, if yer handy with a solder iron, make some y-mic cables yerself.

I think I'll take the lazy road (inserts). :p
