Let me start by saying I am VERY frustrating with the Firebox.
It is incredibly flaky with windows,...XP that is.
I'll start by saying what I want to do. I bought the Presonus Firebox so i could have professional quality recordings (24bit/96k). I also like the fact that I could use 1/4 cables(pro quality). I use the RANE TTM 56 mixer that has 1/4 outputs. I also wanted something with instrument input. My setup: I have 2 turntables, mixer, power amp, and a computer. Mixer OUT to Firebox IN(3/4). Firebox MAIN OUT(1/2) to my pwr amp. And Firewire to my computer. My computer: P4 2.8 GHz, 1 GB RAM with WinXP SP2.
So, in a perfect world I'd like to have the Firebox as my default sound device in windows and disable(in the BIOS) the on board sound that my ASUS mother has. But this just doesn't work. The firebox doesn't work with all windows apps. Video conference over MSN Messenger has no sound. I've tried everything to make that work. Sometimes it works for a couple secounds and then drops. Another example of flakiness: I randomly lose sound, usually because of switching between apps that use audio. I check Sound and Audio in control panel, everything is fine. I change the Mixer Output from MAIN OUT(1/2) to OUT(3/4) in the FireBox Mixer GUI and it starts working. WTF? That makes no sense. It's physically connected to MAIN OUT(1/2). That is flakiness. That's happened a few times too, not just once. I've also seen the default sound device in control change on it's own. Set it one way...works for a bit....stops working. Check control panel it's changed to something else. I've even formatted and started from scratch thinking my system was flaky...nope. Certain apps have no sound at all.
I've recently updated the Firebox fireware and drivers to the most recent.... still no go. Anyway, I don't think you can help me. I don't think the Firebox is fully Windows compatible. It's just not designed to interact with windows to the extent that I want it too. It's fine if you take the computer out of the equation.
Maybe I should get a professional PCI sound card for my computer. The only problem with that is the 2 LINE IN's on my mixer are populated already. So I have no where for the Sound card input from the computer. Unless I use AUX on the mixer... but then no headphones for AUX. That's why it would be nice to get the firebox working.
Should I be using ASIO drivers or no? I've tried using the onboard firewire port and i've also install a PCI expansion card with firewire, same problem.
I just need solution. I hate perpetually trouble shooting this. I very close to selling this thing.
