Hi there!

Yesterday I got myself a Firepod. As per the instructions I started the driver install first and when asked I plugged it in. I was greeted with a nice blue light, but the drivers couldn't find it! "Checking devices..." for a while, then the window asking me to connect again. I took a couple of turns here in the forums, seemed some people were having similar problems - but it theirs seemd to be centered around the red light while i had the blue showing. Still I tried a few things, uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, trying both the v1.20 off the cd and the downloaded v2.46. I was using the fw-controller on my motherboard, maybe that could be at fault, even though Windows Device Manager reported it was a Texas Instruments-chip.

At this point I was feeling a little hopeless and confused. I decided I should unplug everything and start fresh. This is when i noticed the fw-cable could be plugged into the Firepod two ways. Looking closer at the connector it seemed to be shaped like the triangular end of the cable contact should be pointing downwards... which it wasn't. Hm. A closer look at the connectors on my fw-controller revealed that on those the cable could only be inserted one way, and that way was restricted by the close triangular shape on one end of the connector, as opposed to the suggestion of a shape on the Firepod-connector.

Right, so the connector had been upside-down all this time; finally I had figured out what was wrong! If it hadn't been for the blue light saying "connection a-ok!" the whole time maybe I would have figured it out sooner... but I digress.

Then, sorrow struck again, and now I am joining the red light club. Right now I have tried both old and new drivers again. Even though my the fw-controller of my motherboard reports in Device Manager as a Texas Instrument-part I went out and got a TI-based PCIe-addon card (as per the recommendations in the FAQ). Still the same result, which is the "Checking devices..." for a couple seconds, then back to the "Connect your Firepod"-window. Only now the light only shines blue for about 3-4 seconds after turning on the unit, then it turns red and stays red.

So, to make a long story a bit longer: ;)

Could the upside-down cable have damaged the unit in any way? I hope that is not the case, if it was that sensitive surely there would have been some warning of this, or some instruction or mention of cable orientation in the manual?

If not that, what else could be wrong? I've tried two kinds of TI-based controllers, two different cables, old and new drivers, reinstalling drivers... what else?

Finally, the 3-4 seconds of blue light before it turns red, is that what happens for you other red light-people too? Haven't seen anyone mention that particular behaviour.

---

Right then, I hope someone will be able to get through that without falling asleep... and perhaps that someone will be able to help me out.

Oh, one more thing; I tried plugging in a guitar and some headphones - the preamp part works.
