My preamps on my firepod don't seem to be working very well. I have to turn the gain up about 75% to just record acoustic guitar a short distance away. I have the phantom power on and it does record it, it just requires a lot of gain and consequently significantly reduces my amount of headroom and makes the signal hard to manage. I bought it from Musicians Friend as a blemished item but a friend of mine did the same thing and doesn't have a problem. Did I just get unlucky with one that has bad preamps? I've tried all the channels and they react the same way. However, when I record directly an instrument (without a mic needing a pre) it reacts better. Anybody else have preamp problems? Thanks a bunch guys.

You'll need to post a tad more info before it can be determined that you have purchased a DUD! What type, make and model of mikes are you using?
Thanx,

I am using a pair of Rode NT 5 condenser mics.

I would return it, explain your problem, and maybe give the new one a try before leaving the store! Maybe that's why it was sold as a "Blemished" item.
The NT5's should have plenty of gain.;)
