i'm tring to set up a faderport to work with cubase (sx3 & 4). however, the usb-audio does not show up as a midi-port. the driver is installed correctly, it shows up in the windows system settings as a wdm-midi driver. i also tried all the port filtering options in cubase.
any help would be appreciated.....

Does this FAQ help?

no, that's not the problem. i can set up the faderport in the devices section in cubase no problem.
it's point 5 in your faq where i get stuck. i don't see the faderport as a "usb audio device" in the midi in/out section. i don't see the usb audio device in any other musicsoftware (ableton) either. it is installed, it shows up in the windows system settings, but it doesn't show up in any of my musicsoftware

little update from my side:

tried everything i could think of to get the faderport working.
got an new one to make sure it wasn't broken.
restored my computer to the original system it came with when i bought it a few months ago. still, faderport is not working.

my conclusion is (unfortunately) that the faderport does not work with a dell inspiron laptop.

Sorry to spam this, but SX2 does not have a + button at the top left,
looking for ideas from anyone. I have RTFM several times about adding devices in Cubase, to no avail. Please help Wesley.

I got it to work on my laptop but it is much more new then my desktop so I took it as a sine that I should get a new desktop computer. I had no problem installing on my new computer. It is a lot more useful then I thought it was going to be. I installed it first thing when I got my computer to see if it would show up in Start Menu > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Default device MIDI music playback ... ensure the FaderPort shows up as a 'USB Audio Device' like I saw in http://www.gearslutz.com/board/showthread.php?t=94955&highlight=faderport and it did so I installed sx3 and it work perfectly. then I installed my sound card a delta 1010lt and works but I noticed in Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices it douse not show up any more. it works great so I was thinking it might be a conflict with the m-audio drivers when installing.

MSonic, thanks for your email a couple of weeks ago...I've been meaning to send my sysinfo to Presonus to examine, but noticed your more recent post here...my computer is also a Dell Inspiron laptop (an E1705 with WMC OS). There might just be something to your suspicion that Dell Inspiron laptops are not compatible with the Faderport?!

Okay, just purchased the FaderPort today. Followed the directions exactly and, although when connected I see midi activity on the Transport Panel of Cubase, there is no control of any of the functions in Cubase SX.

Also, under "Devices"/"Device Setup", there is not "USB Audio Device option for MIDI Output. I have Cubase SX3.1.1 on a new DELL XPS 410 (2GB of Ram - Duo Core Processor).

Also, in Control Panel/Sound and Audio Devices Properties/Audio tab, the MIDI music playback Default device is USB Audio Driver. Have you had any success in figuring out why the necessary drivers are not available?

Thanks for you help and quick response. Respectfully!

I have had the Fader Port since Dec. Sometime. Earlier someone said that there isn't a + button on SX. Yes, there is. Look harder. NOW! listen. Do you have any other midi interfaces? try starting with your Fader port and then start adding your midi interfaces from there. The only thing I have noticed is that the Fader Port lost its controll of the fader moving on its own when it is in READ mode for automation. It works fine when no other midi is hooked up. Also those of you using CUBASE. sometimes, there is a glich if you open a project up and it wan't saved before seeing the fader port, sometimes it doen't work.

Hello

I have a AMD Dualcore X2 4200+, 2 GB Machine with Win XP Pro
I have a Firebox and a onboard AC97 Soundcard
EVERY Driver is the latest and so are the Windows Updates

I have the same problem, step 5 in the readme/faq, i cannot do
because USB AUDIO DEVICE does not show up in MIDI INPUTS and OUTPUTS
in Nuendo

I think even Windows does not see the MIDI Ports because i did read some
other forums.... these are very interesting in this point of view:

http://help.lockergnome.com/windows/XP-Dual-Core-USB-MIDI-problem-ftopict512526.html

http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.device_driver.dev/browse_thread/thread/a8c9cb9017db0c39/f7c43f5b82a5d0c8?lnk=gst&q=usb+midi&rnum=1#f7c43f5b82a5d0c8

I further think that maybe the AC97 Soundcard is the problem???
I deactivated its own MIDI Port in BIOS, maybe i should turn this setting on?

It is horrible but the USB Audio Device Driver of Windows is dated 2001 :(
and there is no update available for it

PRESONUS, please PROVIDE an OWN driver for FADERPORT
I even would be member of a beta testing if you like :)
please contact me for that purpose...

Kind Regards

Anton

hi anton,

your solution doesn't help. i allready tried everything. even an absolutely clean windows install. it is a problem with certain machines. presonus told me that they are aware of the problem but have no idea what causes it. they are obvisouly working on a solution. i also hope that they come up with their own faderport drivers. usb audio drivers are well known for their problems.....

Hi msonic

Thanks for your quick answer, thanks for stating that a clean reinstallation does not help, thats very strange

i really think its a problem of the 2001 dated windows driver :(
MS should come up with an apppropriate update :)

Cheers

I found a problem with USB Logitec Webcams
(which i also own)

Sorry it is a german forum but some of you understand of course

http://homerecording.de/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=71473&forum=10&post_id=623223

i deinstalled the quickcam and unplugged it
and uninstalled the fireport driver
and disconnected it
and reconnected it
but it did not solve the issue
maybe its really not a logitec webcam issue

@ PRESONUS: i am still waiting for the beta drivers :)

okay, i have another idea

since the other guy is from switzerland and i have a german windows
our "USB Audio Device" is called "USB-Audiogerät"

Maybe there are problems inside Windows with the "ä" Letter

Does anyone else with another Language than German has this problem?

The Problem is really caused by Logitech Webcam
i do not know if it works if i install it again, i wont !!!!
FADERBOX IS GREAT !!!!!

I found a fix that worked for me and I hope it works for anyone else experiencing the same issue. I had to Manually delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters registry values. (maybe only one exists at your place)

To Manually delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters registry values, follow these steps:

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
START > RUN > (Type) REGEDIT (and hit ENTER)

2. Locate the UpperFilters and LowerFilters value under the following key in the registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

Now you have to UNINSTALL THE USB AUDIO DEVICE, UNPLUG IT, AND REPLUG IT AGAIN

VOILA !!!! WORKING !!!!
PS, somehow u have to Use the Emulated USB AUDIO DEVICE Drivers

PS2: you can listen to my tracks on 123audio.de (http://www.123audio.de) :)
everything is downloadable for free in full length, if you do not make money
with it, its released under CREATIVE COMMONS License

No offense, but you Germans have a really strange sense of music! :p

After listening to one of your songs, I really felt the need to dress up all in black and become the host of "Schprokets"! :D

after reading these forums it is evident that there are issues with some Dell laptop computers;--I've been tryin to get both Firebox and Faderport to work. Firebox drops audio and the Faderport is not being recognised by Nuendo. No issues whatsoever with my OLD generic laptop. Really a drag.

Same problem here. Dell laptop and cannot get it to detect USB audio device in step 5 of the setup.

The problem with the current instructions is that they (essentially) state:

"
Copy the FaderPort.dll file into the Cubase SX Components folder (Usually C:\Program Files\Steinberg\Cubase SX\Components)
Launch Cubase SX
Go to Devices > Device Setup...
Click the "+" button and select "PreSonus FaderPort"
Set the "MIDI Input" and "MIDI Output" to 'USB Audio Device'
"

Which kinda misses the point, somewhat, that PreSonus users may well have more than one class compliant, i.e. 'generic' 'USB Audio Device' connected to their DAW ... and it's hard to clearly identify which is which!

Let me explain further:-

It seems I am one of the unfortunate few who just seem unable to get the PreSonus Fader Port to work reliably in Cubase!

So long as I connect it via a USB hub (un-powered, in case this fact has any relevance) and not directly to my DAW it is reasonably stable in operation, even though it requires some setting up from within Cubase every single time I use it!

If I reboot my DAW, I generally find that the (generic) "USB Audio Device" - which resides under the "Windows MIDI" part of the "MIDI" tree in Cubase's "Device Setup" window and which I've conveniently renamed with a more meaningful title of "PreSonus Fader Port" no less(!) - no longer reflects the PreSonus Fader Port which was originally there!

The name I gave it is still present, it's in the 'right' place as far as I'm concerned ... but it appears to have 'swapped' its actual real-world functionality with either of the other 2 USB-connected Behringer BCx2000 devices which I just happen to have connected to my DAW. In other words, the Fader Port is no longer correctly named/labelled, despite working it correctly in the previous session as per the representative name I gave it!

I initially began renaming the PreSonus Fader Port - as I always have for any of the 'generic' USB devices which appear in this Cubase "Device Set-Up" window (and anything else that has a generic title within this DAW) - such that I do not become 'confused' with all the other generic hardware devices I connect (and/or any future new devices). Call me anal, but I like things 'tidy'!

Anyways, in this particular setup window it's the Behringer BCR2000 and BCF2000 control surfaces - which I also rename from their generic "USB Audio Device" nomenclature in order to reflect the hardware function they are performing for THAT DAW/Cubase session - which seems to get 'confused' with the Fader Port and each other ...

... but, given that this 'naming convention' I employ does not seem to 'stick' to the hardware after a re-boot (and is actually entirely misleading as far as any subsequent Cubase session is concerned) it all-too-frequently leaves me back where I started. (Yup, I save the Cubase set-up, preferences, config, hardware, presets, and anything else that can be saved for 'template' or recall purposes!).

Although I have not tested this fully - if memory serves me correctly - I believe that the GENERIC names also become swapped round, e.g. "USB Audio Device (1)" will randomly appear as "USB Audio Device [2]" or "USB Audio Device (3)" or "USB Audio Device [1]", the use of differing types of brackets around the number being an entirely accurate reflection of what's displayed in this Cubase config window.

More often than not (in fact, it may well be always, I don't remember), it's the Fader Port and BCF2000 which become 'swapped' in terms of their names!

As such, I have to to manual re-edit the "Device Setup" within Cubase and, under "Remote Devices", having to re-select an appropriate USB MIDI device - sometimes allocating them in a seemingly random fashion, until the Fader Port, BCF2000 and BCR2000 once again begin to function correctly - each and every time I come to use the Cubase and the Fader Port on this DAW. Aaarrrggghhh!

Once again, without having checked this out thoroughly - after all, I want to make music, not become a PreSonus Test Engineer - I believe the way Windows XP 'names' these devices may well have something to do with the order in which any generic "USB Audio Device" devices are powered up. Regardless, if all such devices are powered up BEFORE even turning the PC on, there still appears to exist a degree of 'randomness' to the allocation of the MIDI/Audio device driver names as seen by Cubase!

This is a superbly elegant piece of kit all-but-ruined by dire drivers. Perhaps PreSonus could give some thought to having the Fader Port driver software AUTOMATICALLY place an entry into Windows which ACCURATELY reflects the device name itself, instead of something generic, random and useless if you have more than one USB Audio / MIDI device connected?

Any feedback/comments welcomed/encouraged! :)

Cheers,

Steve.

PS I have also had sporadic issues with the Fader Port's pan control losing its granularity and becoming a 3-way switch: -63, 0 (or 1, sometimes!) and +63, independent of how slowly or far it is turned.

Any ideas?

I just posted the instructions on how to get the Faderport to work with Cubase SX2 today 11-15-07.
You are right about SX2 not having a + button to access the devices but you can get to them by clicking on the add/remove on the right side and it will then show the devices list.
Select Mackie Hui on the list and click add at the bottom right to add it to your devices.
Then select Mackie Hui under devices on the left and setup your Midi input and Midi output to USB Audio Device (Emulated) then click apply and the Faderport will then work.
Take Care,
sixstringkeith

Hi, I just received the FaderPort and followed the instructions to set it up with my DAW and Cubase 4.
I was previously using nothing more than a mouse (no other USB or MIDI controller)
My problem is that I cannot write fader automation using the FaderPort. When I press WRITE and record a pass, the fader goes down as soon as I touch it and as I move it towards the top it stops very soon after its way up.
Every other fonctions seem to work OK.
If I write a fader automation using my mouse, the FaderPort fader will follow the pass.
Could this be a fault with the FaderPort?
Best regards
Yves
